Play & learn backgammon at skill levels from beginner to world-class!

Backgammon NJ HD is a full-featured game which uses an advanced, neural network-based, artificial intelligence. Play against a computer AI, another person in 2-player mode on one device, or online against friends & others. Using Tutor Mode & Hints, Backgammon NJ HD can show you how to improve your game.

Discriminating players will appreciate how well the AI plays. It uses a neural network trained on millions of positions, a bearoff database, & a match equity table to achieve strong gameplay that will challenge even expert players.

"[I] know strong bg play when I see it. This app is the strongest iPhone bg app I've played with by far. It does not cheat period. ...Analyzing these matches with eXtreme Gammon confirms a world class level of play with normal luck factors. If you are losing, get over it. So would 99.9% of the other backgammon players in the world. It is just that good. Learn from it." -Richard Munitz, Giant of Backgammon, #21 world ranking in 2009

"Backgammon NJ plays at an extremely high level with an excellent interface, and I often use it to practice on my iPhone when I am traveling. I recommend it highly to my students & friends." -Phil Simborg, Professional Backgammon Teacher & Player,

"I've played over 500 games now; I've checked about 5% of these against World Class Desktop programs (GNU, BGBlitz); and I've actually used some of the competition. NJ has the best interface & has more useful functions than any other backgammon apps out there."

"For serious backgammon players, Backgammon NJ is the way to go.", May 2012

Best Backgammon App Available

I have yet to find one better or even close. When it comes to a clean interface, accurate controls, ability to change multiple settings and having an engine based on a proven PC platform this is it. By far the best backgammon app available and worth the price to anyone more than passingly interested in backgammon. Disregard those who feel the engine "cheats". I have yet to find a valid argument supporting this notion and the developers sadly have to waste time "proving" the probabilities are random by tracking rolls in ways no one should ever require. I look forward to future support and updates but haven't noted any major bugs, issues or crashes myself. Honestly what would even be the motivation for a developer to build an engine that cheats? Quit reading this, download this app and play some bkg! :)

Oddly and consistently more doubles for computer

Visuals on the game are excellent. For the most part I have no complaints, but I'm confused because the computer consistently rolls more doubles than I do and it's not just a perception because when I look at the statistics the computer consistently rolls more doubles, more than expected statistically while I consistently roll fewer than expected, over lots and lots of games.i have reset the statistics and this finding is consistent. Is that how level of difficulty is set? Should be through strategy, not fixed roll of the dice.

Update: some actual stats: after hundreds of games the computer consistently gets about 18.6% doubles and I get about 16.4%. That should be about even after so many games. Same pattern recurs when I reset stats. Consecutive doubles: computer gets 90 and I get 60. Lousy and frustrating way for computer to play "advanced". And lazy programming. Level should be based on strategy only. Wish I could get a refund.

non random dice rolls ruin game

The dice rolls are not random. Don't just take my word for it. Many many customers have pointed this out. Save your money and buy another game. It's no fun to play against a computer that cheats.

If you already bought it, you will know that the dice rolls are not random. It's obvious. But it's also easy to test. Play a bunch of games against the computer and see what percentage you win. Then do it again with manual rolls (where you roll real dice for yourself and the computer). You will win a much higher percentage of the games. Trust me. I did this. So did many other players who felt cheated after paying so much for this game.

Also, so-called new "features" make the game significantly worse.

Why can't we look up stats in the middle of an online game anymore? This was great because it allowed you to analyze play in real time. But instead of fixing the non-random dice rolls, the developer got rid of this perfectly good part of the game. I am truly baffled.
