My favorite game of the genre
I'm not particularly addicted to puzzle games. I thought Tetris was overrated. I haven't played Bejeweled or its sequel(s?) on phones or Facebook. That said, I do like this. I think it's the character building aspect that has me hooked. I enjoy trying different character builds for different play strategies. My current is focused on magic, for example. I have no complaints in regards to what's offered in the game. If I were Konami, I'd strongly consider adding a two player mode. This game screams for the ability to pit one player's character against another. It screams for it. Screams. Anyway, if you're into puzzle games, especially of the versus battle variety, you really can't go wrong here. You'd be hard pressed to find one with better sound and graphics, and the play control is spot on. In the price spectrum of iApps, $5.00 isn't really in the "Just give it a try" end of the spectrum, but I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you're not a puzzle fan but are a Castlevania fan, and you're just here because of the SotN background, I don't think there are enough Castlevania gameplay elements to please you. If you don't like puzzle games, the level raising and combat mechanics of the duels won't really satisfy, so I'd hold off for the inevitable platformer. Castlevania's their cash cow, and everyone likes vampires these days, so you know one is coming.
... But Enough Talk. Have At It!
It doesn't make any sense that someone would give this game a bad rating because of what it isn't, as opposed to what it is and claims to be. "Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night" is a puzzle game, and an exceptional one at that. At first, I mistook it as a block-puzzle game that was stealing from the likes of Tetris and Bejeweled... and it is, but its role-playing game elements, and Castlevania theme elevate it to something great. All of Symphony of the Night's marvelous tracks have been reproduced spectacularly and the castle, and its inhabitants, are as insane as always. The story has been watered down, and dialogue (text-based) isn't accurate to SotN, but the tale is still true to its outline. Spells are the greatest thing that this game has to offer. They change the pace of every battle completely. They are what truly makes this game different from its block-puzzle predecessors. I'm about 42% through with the story mode after about 4 1/2 hours of gameplay, which I've casually spread out in the course of three months. I haven't explored the other game mode, "Arcade Mode," but I can't wait to, once I've complete the story mode. If you're a true fan Castlevania, who adores the characters, music, and universe, unlike the angry children who've rated this app 1 star, you'll agree with this review... But enough talk. Have at it!
Great game, some flaws
This is a great game and is very nostalgic. Fun matching mechanic somewhat akin to Puzzle Fighter with an engaging RPG mechanic of leveling up, allocating stats and gathering items from Symphony of the Night. Appealing to fans of the game/theme of the game. Excellent value for 99 cents...lots of replay value.
HUGE complaint from me is that the music from each zone of the castle stops and a jarring, repetitive battle theme starts up every time you enter combat. Would much rather listen to the awesome music of each zone during battles. Would get 4.5 stars if not for this.
Other small flaws are the block breaking sound is somewhat sharp and annoying, the inconsistency of attacks and lack of ingame way to see monster abilities and specific related mechanics. These small flaws plus the bigger music complaint I mentioned prevent a five star rating for this otherwise great game.
