Update information is not correct
Although the 1.1 update states that this program is integrated system wide and can speak text from within any application by selecting the "Speak it" option, this is simply not true. First of all, in the applications that it does work with, it simply cuts and pastes the text into Speak it and starts speaking it. It does not speak the text from within the application. Most importantly, it does not work at all with most third party programs-I haven't tried everything, but it doesn't work with Text Wrangler, NeoOffice, Second Life or Firefox (all latest versions). The "integration"-such as it is-does seem to work with Apple's own programs, including Textedit, Safari, Pages, Keynote, Preview and iChat, although the steps to get it to work are inconsistent-sometimes there is a Speak it in the popup menu, sometimes its buried in one of the submenus. Not useless, just not as stated. It may be worth the minimal price, but be warned the update notes are not correct. In the iPad version, it also provideds many other voices for inapp purchase. I expect this feature is coming to this program on the Mac also, and that is very nice indeed.
Please Add Voice Choices!
The iPod compatible version of this APP has been tremendously helpful for me, as a person with severe Attention Deficit Disorder and Obssessive Compulsive Disorder. I only wished this had been around when I was in ungrad and graduate school. At that time I could only rely (somewhat) on special tapes sent via mail of particular texts put on tape by the 'Reading For the Blind & Dyslexic' organization in Washington, D.C.
I haven't found a link or means to purchase other Speak it! voices for my MAC APP the way I found a more suitable selection for my iPod. Is there a way to add a voice to my MAC APP? If not, then please offer a way, otherwise I may tear my iPod apart using it so much. Thanks for the App. I will change my rating to five if you offer more voices on the MAC APP.
like it but am frustrated - this app deserves the effort to make better
I have Speak it 1.1.1. (Build 968).
I like the voices better than MacSpeak, (Rachel is more natural than Vicki, for instance).
I operates intuitively in the interface by copy and pasting.
1000 word limit. I oughtent to have to run a WordCount Applescript to guestimate the portions I need to record and suture in iMovie for a presentation CD.
Stop returns one to the beginning. A pause-buttom is desprately needed in the next update.
Conclusion: This is a $ 1.99 public Beta that definitly deserves the effort to make it a $4.99 app with more functionality. I like it but am frustrated.
Note my review is only for 1.1.1 iteration!
