"Trimensional… is this week’s Best Thing Ever, without a doubt. It’s one of those photography apps that stands out against all the rest because it’s so different." -Cult of Mac
"It actually works amazingly well… this really is a 3-D object scanner for the iPhone." -FastCompany
"This is the most innovative mobile phone application I have ever seen to date. Absolutely brilliant." -Matthew Brooks, App Store User Review
Trimensional uses both the screen and the front-facing camera on your iOS device, detecting patterns of light reflected off your face to build a true 3D model.
Not only is it incredible technology, but it's incredibly fun! Capture goofy expressions, view your face from any angle, and customize the look of the 3D rendering before sending it off to all of your friends.
-Capture your own 3D scans
-Browse your 3D scan library
-Rotate and zoom your 3D models
-Pick from 6 different 3D rendering modes
-View a 3D slideshow
-Email images, movies, & animated GIFs to friends
-Save images to camera roll for posting to the web
Features for Advanced Users:
-3D Model Export (In-App Purchase): Export any scan as an OBJ, STL, or PLY file via email, with optional mesh smoothing. OBJ: texture-mapped polygonal model compatible with Maya, Blender, and most other 3D software packages, STL: watertight geometry suitable for 3D printing, PLY: point cloud with position (XYZ) and color (RGB) information per vertex.
So, turn out the lights, turn up your screen brightness, and get ready for your close-up as you capture 3D scans using your iPhone 4 or 4th Generation iPod Touch*. For best results, an extremely dark room is required and iPhone screen brightness must be set to maximum.
HOLIDAY GIFT IDEA: Laser-engrave your 3D scans in crystal at www.trimensional.com/crystal/
*REQUIRES FRONT-FACING CAMERA.
NOTE: Users running older iOS versions 4.0.x have reported problems launching the app. Upgrading to iOS 4.1 or greater is confirmed to solve this problem. We messed up and we apologize greatly for this error. We are working on a solution for those unable to upgrade their iOS version.
What's New in Version 1.02
Share videos and animated GIFs of your 3D scans, and advanced users can now choose to export 3D models!
• Create a Quicktime movie of any 3D model rotating (shared via email).
• Create an animated GIF of any 3D model rotating (shared via email).
• New "flick" gesture to restart spinning models in 3D view.
• 3D Model Export (In-App Purchase): Export any scan as an OBJ, STL, or PLY file via email, with optional mesh smoothing. OBJ: texture-mapped polygonal model compatible with Maya, Blender, and most other 3D software packages, STL: watertight geometry suitable for 3D printing, PLY: point cloud with position (XYZ) and color (RGB) information per vertex.
More improvements are on the way, so stay tuned. If there are features you'd like to see added, let us know via the "Send Feedback" button in the app. Thanks!
Cool... sort of.
I was really curious to try this app. It looked great. After buying the app I'm not bummed out, but surely I'm not overwhelmed with excitement. The novelty of this app wore off in about 2 minutes. That said the 3-D photos from the app are really cool, that is, when you get a good one. Unfortunately the images produced are super low resolution and sometimes weird stuff happens. How truly 3-D the images are is questionable too... I snapped a pic of a soda can and it rendered with what looked to be a nose and facial features. Other photos couldn't have been more "wrong". I did take a great shot of my dog, and some other photos were nice... but ultimately because of the low-reolution I could never do anything with them but look at them in a novelty kinda way. I sent my mom a 3-d pic of me, she didn't recognize it was me. If an update could improve the mapping, increase the resolution, and make more consistent results I'd be much happier. Its a great idea, but maybe its time hasn't come yet.
For 99 cents its fun and not a waste of money at all, but I doubt it'll be your favorite app.
Stellar 'proof-of-concept' - two three-dimensional thumbs up!
Awesome - Mr. Schindler, you've done a good thing, sir - thank you. This is a fantastic and fun view on what's shaping up for our future - a bit of wireframe-mapping via apps like this, "augmented reality" integration and mobile gizmo magic and you're looking at some really amazing apps and games coming our way in the next few years. I'm finding that leaving this on "Polygons" (vs points) renders the best movies, and definitely use it in total darkness as recommended in-app via the help menu...otherwise background light affects your captures. Super-great - two three-dimensional-thumbs up.
Remarkable app, quite useful for pros even.
3D scanning has for a long time required exceptional expensive hardware, and even expensive laser scanners produce noisy scans. This app is a remarkable value at $6 w/ export option. Take the noisy 3D into a 3D app to either clean up or as a tracing guide to model properly, either way the app is going to get a lot of use from me.
Haven't fully used the app yet but I hope there is a way to delay the snapshot so I can steady the phone after tapping
