This app complements The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s special exhibition Guitar Heroes: Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York. Through collaborations with musicians and experts, the app brings to life the guitar makers’ creative process and celebrates the enduring relevance of these instruments. It features museum-commissioned musical performances expressly designed for this exhibition, artist interviews, and rarely seen archival video footage.
The app may be used either as a guide to the exhibition or on its own, and once it is downloaded, no Internet connectivity is required to access its content.
Additional content and information about the exhibition is available at www.metmuseum.org/guitarheroes.
This app was developed by the Digital Media Department with the guidance and support of the Department of Musical Instruments at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The exhibition is made possible in part by Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Chilton, Jr.
The multimedia tour is made possible by The Jonathan & Faye Kellerman Foundation.
The Audio Guide program is made possible by Bloomberg.
This is a great complement to the amazing exhibition Guitar Heroes at the Met in NYC. A must download a see.
better outside the museum than as an exhibition guide
This app is much better outside of the museum - it doesn't work so well as a guide within the exhibition because it takes too many 'clicks' to get around, and it's not clear when we're supposed to be paying attention to the screen and when we're supposed to be looking at the instruments on display. It was distracting instead of enhancing. I also didn't understand the 'featured instrument' - each time it just shows you a picture of what you're looking at already with the credit line. I expected to find out why it was featured. Also a small but annoying thing: each time you use the keypad (as you would in the exhibition) you have to delete the prior number you inputted before you can put a new number in. It's a lot of fidgeting with the screen. I liked the curator commentary, though, and the performance videos. All in all, nice for outside the museum, not so much as an exhibition guide.
Great complementary app to museum exhibit
We went to see the guitar exhibit at the met and brought our son who just turned 3. While I was able to enjoy and appreciate these beautiful instruments and marvel at the craftsmanship that went into making them, I didn't have much time to read the labels. But then luckily at home i found this app and read and listened through all the segments. I now have a much better understanding what this exhibit was all about, and it was very nice to hear the guitars being played too.
If you go see that exhibit and/or have an interest in guitars then this is pretty much a nobrainer.
