“The biggest software advance for writers since the word processor.”
- Best-selling novelist Michael Marshall Smith

Typewriter. Ring-binder. Scrapbook. Scrivener combines all the writing tools you need to craft your first draft, from nascent notion to final full stop.

Tailor-made for creating long manuscripts, Scrivener banishes page fright by allowing you to compose your text in any order, in sections as large or small as you like. Got a great idea but don’t know where it fits? Write when inspiration strikes and find its place later. Grow your manuscript organically, idea by idea.

Whether you plan or plunge, Scrivener works your way: meticulously outline every last detail first, or hammer out a complete draft and restructure later. Or do a bit of both. All text sections in Scrivener are fully integrated with its outlining tools, so working with an overview of your manuscript is only ever a click away, and turning Chapter Four into Chapter One is as simple as drag and drop.

Need to refer to research? In Scrivener, your background material is always at hand, and you can open it right alongside what you’re working on. Write a description based on a photograph. Transcribe an interview. Check for consistency with an earlier chapter.

Once you’re ready to share your work with the world, compile everything into a single document for printing, create an e-book, or export to popular formats such as Word, PDF, Final Draft or plain text. You can even share using different formatting, so that you can write in your favorite font and still keep your editor happy.

Scrivener’s users include best-selling novelists, screenwriters, students, academics, lawyers, journalists and translators. It won’t tell you how to write - it just provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing.

Mostly Love

I really appreciate so many features of this, particularly that I can separate out chapters and have a better outline and character guides without constantly having to go to the beginning or ending of my document where I have notes because I can’t remember a detail and then I lose my place where I was writing. I feel like this program is all about convenience and I have been amazed at how many features I didn’t realize I wanted while working on my novels! It’s also great that you can format for manuscript, ebook, or paperback.

A couple things I would like to see in future updates: The ability to add lots of photos of my characters. Maybe this feature exists but I’ve tried doing it many times and haven’t been successful. I have characters where one picture has the body type and hair, but another photo has the face and clothes that are most like my character. It’s hard when your character is an amalgamation of images.
The other thing I’d love to see is really silly, but the ability to add a playlist. Music helps me extensively in setting the scene and I would love to be able to have a playlist for each novel already built into the program. I know, it’s a writing app, not a music one, but it would be rather convenient. Of the two novels I’m working on right now, one main character listens to The Ramones and the other listens to traditional Ethiopian tribal music. It would be handy to keep these separate in their individual files.

This is not a wordprocessor, it’s left that behind.

The authors of this application take pains to say how this is not a wordprocessor and it's not a tool for creating finished books, documents, etc. but more a tool for getting the words down. I have to call foul. They're being far too modest. I've used this application to create full color illustrated ePub documents as well as instructional material. I'm currently using it to develop a book after upgrading from "Notes". Every once in a while I discover a new feature that reminds me that this isn't a cut down word processer with a focus on creating a story, it's actually a very powerful authoring tool with features and functionality that simple Office products haven't even thought about let alone implemented.

If you have any document bigger than a twitter message, consider investing the time to learn the features of Scrivener.

Update August 2017; after dalying with Ulysses I’m back.

Words cannot express my regret. The other was young, sleek, and provocative. My first love for you had become cold and I lost my focus in our routine. The other caught my eye as I drifted from our special time together every day. I was unfaithful. I am sorry. Please, forgive me.
I was bored and I hoped to stir the passion of our first love, even if it was with another. The lure was shiny and I swallowed the baited hook. It was delicious for a time, until the hook’s barb pierced my deceived heart. My pleasure was momentary and melted faster than a triple scoop ice cream cone on a hot summer afternoon.
I missed you and your adolescent Scapple. I came across his image in an album and remembered the memories we made, the stories we wrote, and the time we enjoyed together along the way.
Can you ever excuse me and absolve my guilt? Will you always hold a grudge? Will you forever remind me of my mistakes?
I am back. I understand your skepticism. You know my nature, and there will always be another dangling its lure in my face.
In the meantime, let us write stories together again, research the unsearchable, and enjoy one another’s company again.
Maybe, one day, you will again trust me to be loyal. If you must, although I hope you will not, I will understand your decision to look for subscribers and their prepaid promise of loyalty and wealth. The other did.
There are many, but none like you. Thank you.
