AutoPainter vol 2: "The Illustrators" automatically turns your photo into a realistic drawings using some of the best rendering styles available on any system.
The first volume of AutoPainter featured mixed styles of oil and aquarell painting, the vol.2 now focuses on primarily illustration techniques.
For this application the AutoPainter process has been especially tweaked to work with the new type of of styles that use combination of water color and pen shading.
The bold chalk strokes and patterns give the immediate feel of quick form study. It works well on still life or any large recognizable shapes that don't have big need for details.
This style creates hand-painted illustration using water colors and pen shading. It is inspired by the book illustration techniques. Works on portraits or landscapes, for best result make sure the objects are well separated from background.
Vivid, modern illustration style using colored felt-tip pens that borrows from late impressionism with a hint of cubism.
This works well on portraits and landscapes. For portraits use the Mask brush to paint over face areas to give smoother appearance.
Wet on Dry technique with a fine ink shading strokes. Works best on easily recognizable shapes, landscapes or well separated portraits from the background.
Look at our other AutoPainter apps that feature additional painting techniques.
Note: This process is rather sophisticated and while we tried to do full resolution it was not stable due to high memory requirements. The current medium resolution of 1280 in longest size is a good compromise between quality and usability. It produces pretty great and sharp results because unlike a photo this is completely digitally created image - it has no noise and no Bayer approximation. If you are interested we have applications for desktop.
Real goodness here
This is a lovely little app. It is like having a bit of Studio Artist in your pocket. I take it that this app also uses an underlying vector analysis of your image to enable it to have sensible ideas of where and in what direction strokes should go. That puts it light years ahead of apps that just apply filters.
Those who think you cannot stop the process when you want seem not to have noticed the stop button--which is already in place. Personally, I could wish for a non-disruptive snapshot button to quickly save candidate versions on the fly--and then the ability to choose between these at the end. That would be lovely.
Those who want the app to process images at a higher resolution than it does underestimate the processing power required for doing what this app does, I suspect. I doubt they would really have the patience to wait the exponentially longer time a doubled-resolution process would require. So, higher resolution sounds good, but maybe only in pace with faster processors.
Some people want all kinds of control and features--and these all want high rez too. Honestly, get a desktop application, if you want to do serious work of this nature. Your 99 cents only buys you "neat".
Some nice output, especially using the "chalk" setting. Unfortunately, the dev's claim of limiting the app's resolution to no more than 1280 pixels (less than half of iPhone6 res) leaves this app at the level of a "fun toy" and not a serious photographic/art filter.
There are a few major bugs: camera does not work at all (blank black screen), and artifacts/heavy hard-edged pixels are created when using some of the filters (especially Watercolor). These may be iOS 8 related.
This app has a lot of promise however: fix the bugs and find a way to increase the resolution beyond lo-res levels...
Cool, but needs improvement.
Great effects! Will you please make an iPad version or make this universal, that would be better. Also please make it so that you can save the picture in higher resolution, at least the same resolution as the original. I need my pictures to be at least 2048x1536. That is their original size before I use the app and it makes them smaller.
