Description

The venerable U.S. weather app Wx, named a Mac Gem by Macworld magazine, has been reinvented! Wx displays current conditions, forecasts, warnings, and radar for U.S. locations using high fidelity XML data from the U.S. National Weather Service. The app is designed for two specific types of customers: serious weather watchers who want detailed information and facts with no fuss, and casual users who want a fast, clean, and functional weather app.

Wx lets you set up locations on an embedded map, guiding you to choose nearby NWS observation sites (over 1700 available in the U.S. and its territories), nearby NEXRAD radar sites, and nearby city- and county-based alert zones. The app sets up a 7-day summary "point" forecast customized for the specific latitude and longitude of the location, and a 7-day “pro” forecast that graphs temperature (actual and apparent), dew point, relative humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction, gust speed, 12-hour probability of precipitation, 6-hour liquid precipitation amount, and 6-hour snow amount. Wx’s pro forecast is also latitude/longitude based, and is about as good as it gets if you need to plan work, sports, hobbies, and outdoor activities based on upcoming weather. With their high spatial resolution, the point and pro forecasts are especially useful in coastal and mountainous regions, where typical zone forecasts can be inaccurate. These forecasts are backed up by a regional text forecast bulletin for additional information.

Wx also lets you bookmark and setup weather maps for quick reference. Choose from over 40 default NWS maps and images, or provide the URL for any map of your choice and load it right in the app! If you have preferred weather providers, you can load your favorite maps and images right in Wx and keep them handy. Other features of Wx include a display of weather conditions in the dock icon, seven day sun and moon phase information, and a high performance multi-threaded radar display with seven types of radar.

Wx is crafted with attention to detail by an award-winning professional software developer with over 20 years of experience, 9 years focused on developing weather software for Mac OS X and 6 years writing apps for iOS devices. Wx has been reinvented from the ground up. Under the hood, Wx has all new download and processing engines, and is faster than ever. It's more reliable than ever too, offering multiple levels of redundancy to handle severe weather events that can strain NWS servers.

Wx is also available for iPhone and iPad. For more info, see hrtapps.com or look in the iTunes App Store.

Please note that app reviews are only for other customers to read; developers are not able to respond to or interact with reviewers in that format. For tech support, bug reports, feedback, and feature requests, contact the developer by e-mail. Use the "contact" link in Wx's help menu, or use the "support" link listed above right. Your direct feedback is encouraged, as it helps steer future development of Wx.

What's New in Version 6.2.1

Wx now pulls text forecast information from an alternate source, working around problems caused by NWS server upgrades in mid March. This version also fixes some graphical glitches in the sidebar on OS X 10.9.

Customer Reviews

More info and nothing else...

I have been using Wx for years and wrote a review of 6.1, It’s been a while since then and I am pleased to see the update. Everything I said before is still true…
“Have you noticed how many weather apps forcus on animation and flashy presentation of temp and rain forecasts? And not much else! This app is just the opposite. No glitzy animation, no oceans or clouds in the background, just the weather forecast and more maps than you'll find most anywhere else. For true weather junkies, this is the app you'll return to again and again when what you want is the weather, all the weather, nothing but the weather.”

I travel for business and have my destinations all bookmarked. It’s the simplest, fastest, easiest to use app and it’s been on my desktop for many years. I’m sure it will be there for years to come.

Five stars - easy

My comments from 2011 still hold true. I use this app daily relying on the graph feature to best anticipate hourly changes. In Maine that is of great value, especially during the “cusp seasons” changing from winter to summer and back again.

The other use I put WX to is for travel when I set my itinerary locals and then can track weather on the fly. Very convenient.

Yes, there are skads of weather apps, it’s just that this one is the one that I find most useful day in day out. I have several others, but when it comes down to it, WX is the one I open, everytime.

Every update has been worthwhile and this one is as well.

Long time user

This is for 6.2.1. After a period of time during which the National Weather Service kept changing their set up, it appears Craig Hunter has lost patience with NWS and changed the way WX gets text-based weather forecasts - for the better. They load quickly and so far there are no problems with absent forecasts. WX has always been the best in terms of clearly presented data - what you need to know in clearly presented charts - along with the option to incorporate NWS weather radar, either static or animated. I’ve used this app since early versions and will continue to do so.
