What's New in Version 5.3

The Bionic Edition

This release is all about making 1Password for Mac better, faster and stronger. We've added two-step verification, the ability to call and email with a single click and given some existing features a big power-up! Meet 1Password 5.3, the bionic edition.

Two-steps stronger
Time-Based One-Time Passwords for two-step verification are here! Check out http://1pw.ca/TOTPdoc to learn more and get your TOTP on. Bonus: if you own Pro features in 1Password for iOS, your one-time passwords will sync!

Faster communication
◆ Start a FaceTime Audio or Skype call. From 1Password. Simply by clicking numbers stored in Identities.
(if there was a “head explode” emoji, and if Apple allowed emoji in App Store descriptions, imagine it here.)
◆ Ditto for sending emails from addresses in Software Licenses.

+5 power bonus to customization
◆ Custom Fields bonanza!
◆ We added even more Custom Field types, including URL, email, address, One-Time Passwords, date, and month/year.
◆ Secure Notes are now even more versatile: you can add sections and custom fields.

Better date handling
Our developers spent a lot of time fine-tuning 1Password's date handling so that you can traverse the globe without worrying about your passport's expiry date. But seriously, we're really sorry about the date issues. We think we fixed them all, and we have a blog post coming with more information about this issue.

And a better brain
◆ Re-designed the Brain for faster, more accurate filling on websites. The heart was just fine, thanks for asking.
◆ Improved Credit Card and Identity filling on several sites, including Hilton, Cineplex, Drafthouse, Amazon, and PayPal.
◆ The 1Password mini icon has been refined.
◆ Improved searching so that you don't need exact matches for accented characters.
◆ Added support for new languages and updated translations.
◆ Added wildcard support for ignored URLs in autosave.

Many other improvements and fixes based on your feedback.

1Password never prompts you for a review. We value your workflow too much to interrupt it. If you feel generous and have a couple of minutes, please leave a review. It makes a huge difference to us. Thank you in advance!

Customer Reviews

1Password needs too many keystrokes & clicks

On the strength of these reviews and several others in the mac world, I decided to bite the bullet and convert from my Roboform password manager from my PC days to 1Password. I agree that it is a very polished app with many nice features, but I found it far less efficient than Roboform for routine password handling. I had both apps active for about a month and Roboform ALWAYS gave me a pop-up asking if I wanted to save a new website password, whereas 1Password was very hit or miss and only asked about half the time. But my biggest issue is how they compare when going to a previously used website. With Roboform, I click once to get a dropdown of frequently used websites, click once, and I’m in, as Roboform goes to the website, loads my password and submits it, all automatically and quickly. With 1Password, I have to open it, type my one master password to unlock it, click, find and click on the site icon, then click submit, after it loads the password. So, I’ve returned to my old standby, that doesn’t have all of the bells and whistles, but is rock solid quick on the basics.

Great password app…highly recommend

Honestly I wish I could give half star increments….if so I’d give it 4.5 stars. The app does what it says and that’s awesome. It really does work like a charm. I feel like it’s got more functionality than I even use but what I do use does great. The developers seem to be responsive to the community as well. For months now I’ve been wishing i could see the password in larger text, and all of a sudden, there it is. They seem to anticipate needs.

The only thing I find as a negative is it’s expensive to have it on multiple platforms. I use it on iOS, Mac and Windows. That’s a fair amount of money out of my pocket for this app. The main reason I dinged them one star was because of this and because I had originally bought the app directly from them, and then they added functionality but only to the app store app and that means I had to purchase it again. That seemed to be a bad move for loyal customers. Otherwise, I love it.

Great software, well maintained

There is a reason 1Password has so many positive reviews. The only negative review (of this version, at the time of this writing) is because the reviewer is upset that the mobile version is seperate from the desktop version, and both cost money. Doesn’t seem fair to give 1Password 2 stars because of this model which is pretty commonplace, and seems reasonable as some users will be mobile only and some will be desktop only.

I’ve been using 1Password for a few years now, and they have been excellent about adding new features in a timely fashion (like TouchID, mobile Safari integration). They keep refining the program and adding features, yet maintain focus on keeping it highly functional and easy to use.

When you choose to being using centralized password management, it is a commitment of a little bit of money and a whole lot of time. Don’t cheap out on it, don’t cut corners. Get 1Password and you’ll be happy you did.

It would be nice to see iCloud Keychain integration, however this may not be feasible for technical or license based reasons. Supporting some form of native two-factor authentication, and integrating directly into third party apps (ie: free API) would be really nice as well.
