What's New in Version 1.2
We've FIXED (20 points) some BUGS (13 points) and SMOOTHED (16 points) out some PLAY (11 points) issues.
*** Please remember to completely shut down the Quarrel app before installing this update. ***
We'll see you on the leaderboards!
So much fun from an offline game.
Update to iOS 5.0.1 if you have not already done so; the new update is apparently made for it. That update pretty much stops the app from crashing.
Even though this game could be much better with an online match mode, I still gave it 5 stars because of the fun I had playing against three AI opponents. The top three AI opponents do not let up, they really hound you with big words.
The graphics are cute and I love sound effects, especially the little people when they scream out for a 20+ point word.
Playing a four-way game can take a lot of time, upwards of an hour or so. Even so, the action pretty much never stops since you still can make words while two other opponents quarrel with each other.
One thing I found particularly cheap was the ability to pause during any quarrel. This allows you to memorize the letters and values, and after pausing, you can take all the time you need to figure out a high value word. Or, if you think like my friend does, use another phone or internet-capable device to look up word descramblers.
It can be better if there was a confirmation screen before a quarrel, asking "Are you ready?" or "Tap to continue" so that you can leave your apple device alone at a moment's notice. Then the pause button can be removed.
Great fun, but a bit quirky for Americans
This game has lived up to the (considerable) hype-- it's fast and furious fun, rock solid (I'm not seeing the crashes others report), and offers a great challenge even without multi-player online. I've played about 100 games so far, and still marvel at the quality and variability of the AI.
One huge downside for word nerds, however-- the game uses an "official Scrabble dictionary" for its word lists, but it's obviously not the same one I know. The anagrams often use British spelling, and many of the unusual words used (mostly by Max) are not in the US version of the dictionary. It's quite frustrating to get beat in a close battle by some oddball Scottish colloquialism, British slang, or variant spelling. On the plus side, it does accept the US spellings just fine (though as a Canadian ex-pat I will often add the 'u' for 3 more points <grin>). It would be really nice, however, to have an option to use a US-English dictionary instead.
Still, this is a minor point, and rarely affects the game play unless Max is involved. The game is well worth the price (particularly if you can catch it on sale!), and is starting to rival Tichu and Mu as a time-sink for me...
Surprisingly More Deep Than You'd Think...
I accidentally stumbled across Quarrel on an ad while looking up a video. The game seemed a little silly, but I figured that I'd check it out.
To my surprise, this game is actually really fun! It's like a cross combination mix of the popular Risk game, with a word game twist. The game involves plenty of strategy to beat AI opponents and there's a lot of content for your buck!! The game is very upbeat with a lot of fun visuals and the soundtrack is very upbeat.
My only gripe with the game is that it needs multiplayer, badly. I highly recommend this game to people looking for new twists of strategy games.
-Lots of content
-Great visuals and soundtrack
-Daily Challenges and level up system
-Lack of multiplayer
