What a classic
Yikes, people are really going at it against this game, huh? The ads aren't even that intrusive to the gameplay. It's not like they'll make you stop in the middle of a level to watch an ad, and most of the ads can be skipped. I do think that they could tone it down a bit though. Because most of the zones in Sonic CD can be rushed through fairly quickly, you may end up getting an ad every minute if you are fast enough. Rather than have an ad show up every time you complete a zone without exception, it may have been a better idea to give the ads a 5 minute timer, and when that timer is done, it will show you an ad the next time you either pause the game or finish a zone. Even still, I don't see why so many people are complaining about the ads, since the only people who would find these ads to be such a huge problem that they would rate the game with only one star are probably not the type of people that are absolute speed demons at the game anyways. If you're trying to get all of the good futures, then the ads become even less of a problem since you'll most likely be finding yourself spending a few minutes in each zone in that case. This is a fine way to make the game free. Is it the best? No, they could have handled it better, but who even cares? It's fun, and that's that.
Why all the hate?
I downloaded this when it was Free App of the Week a while back, and I finally got around to completing it 100%. Sonic CD is a fantastic entry in the Sonic series, and this is a competent port. Is it the best port? No. Is it a bad port? Far from it. The main complaint I hear about is of the ads when it was downloaded as Free App of the Week. I understand why they did the ads. Sega kinda needs the money in order to make their new games, and the ads are a little thing to give them just that little bit of cash they may need. The game itself is also one of the best in the series. The level design is good, the graphics are nice, the music is AMAZING including the infamous "Sonic Boom" and "You Can Do Anything". Now, the way you get the Good Ending isn't the best. You can either get all the Time Stones, OR you can Smash every Eggman Generator in the game. All of them. And they're not easy to find. If you're gonna play Sonic CD, play it with Maps of the stages. It will save you a lot of hassle. I give the original game 8.5/10, but I give this port 6.5/10, I don't really like the touchscreen controls. If you're wanting to play this game, play the Steam port of Sonic CD on PC. It's the best version of the game. :)
I don't usually write reviews but this game is truly broken. After a ton of 30 seconds ads you finally get to play the game, sadly the music, which is a part of what made this game great in the first place, will often not even play while you're going through the levels. This left me confused at first but I decided to push through and sweet mother of god it was not worth it. Whenever an enemy hits you without the music playing it makes the loudest screech known to man, leaving you scrambling for your volume button and questioning why you ever thought a free version of Sonic CD would be anything but awful. Next I'll move to the controls, they are the absolute worst, there is a reason why the D-Pad on controllers still persist today, they are precise. Every click should take you in the direction you need to go, and every single movement in such a fast paced game like Sonic CD is extremely crucial to even getting through the level. However the sad excuse for a D-Pad that they give you here works like you're using an ice cube, one slip of the finger and Sonic will move in the opposite direction you desired, breaking any sense of speed that you'd possessed up to that point.
Overall it was a terrible idea to try to port this beloved game to an IOS device. If you don't heed the advice I've given you then I have only one thing to say, good luck.
