Great puzzles but frustrating controls
This game is wonderfully creative and beautiful while at the same time being so frustrating that after playing for 10 minutes I questioned whether I would even bother to finish it. This is my favorite type of game: a nice mix of adventure, point and click, puzzle and logic. Many of the puzzles were original and fun, in fact some of the best I've seen in this genre. But this game made me feel stupid because even though I knew what I needed to do next, I was constantly looking at a walkthrough because what I was trying to do wasn't working.
You have to tap in just the right spot, while standing just close enough, and there is little margin of error. When you're trying to use an object you have to hover it in just the right place or it flies back into your inventory. I cannot tell you how many times I checked an online walkthrough yet again only to see that the next step is in fact what I had just tried to do. So I move the robot a little closer or hover the object in a slightly different spot and then it finally works.
I did end up finishing the game but I feel like a lot of fun was taken out of it because of how many times I got 'stuck' due to the crappy controls. This game would be greatly improved if you weren't constantly repositioning the robot or hovering an item just a tiny bit in another direction in order to make things work properly.
Attractive & Fun Puzzle Adventure
I found this game a bit frustrating initially due to the simple but minimally explained interface. Once I began to get the hang of how things work I was able to appreciate Machinarium as an addictive puzzle adventure with beautiful graphics and an endearing sense of humor.
Tip: If you click the icon in the upper right of the screen it brings up a locked book with a built in side-scrolling game. Navigate the flying key (which can also shoot, using the middle button) past the deadly spiders to unlock the book and view a sketchy storyboard-style explanation of how to defeat the level you're on. Note: this will tell you exactly how to solve all the puzzles in the level, which can take the fun out of exploring the environment and figuring things out on your own, so only use it when you get stuck. It's a good idea to snap a screen capture of the storyboard for later reference so you don't have to beat the spiders again to reopen the book later.
I rate this 4 stars. It would get the 5th star if the player were better introduced to the game mechanics in the beginning, and if the storyboard walkthrough could be used in steps to get you progressively closer to the solution without giving everything away on one page.
Remember "Day of the Tentacle"? If you liked that, you'll love this.
As a preteen, I loved Legends of Kyrandia and then as a teen, discovered Day of the Tentacle (both for old Macs...well, new Macs at the time). I have been looking for an awesome adventure puzzle game like that and this is it. My 8 and 11 year old girls are enjoying it too (it seems to be rated 12+ for the difficulty and that you have to roll a cigarette for a robot for one challenge).
I just beat the game, then whizzed through it a second time. There was only one glitch. When you beat the game, you have to watch ALL the credits. You can't load a saved game or start a new one until they are finished. If you close the game, you are stuck watching the credits again. If you watch them, then click "resume game," it doesn't let you pick from your saved games, but makes you watch all the credits again. The only choice is to watch all the credits, click "start new game", then load a different saved game. It took me 4 times of watching the credits to figure it out...
