Official Dead Island Map App
By Dorling Kindersley
Open iTunes to buy and download apps.
The only officially licensed app for the year's most anticipated release:
** Zoom and scroll through detailed maps of the entire game
** Locate all in-game collectibles: ID Cards, Banoi Herald editions and Investigation Tapes
** Track which collectibles have been found and which await discovery
** Official music from the game
Flat out wrong in some cases.
This app worked great for the resort map. It did not work at all for moresby. There were multiple instances of incorrect depictions of locations. I think they were moved some time during development but that's no excuse.
Just for example, ID card 43 is supposed to be in an abandoned house ala guide. When I got to the house it was nowhere to be found. It ended up it was outside the house.
Some of the clues are just flat out wrong. A card that is in a warehouse in moresby says that it is in the jungle.
For the good, the pictures are very helpful in finding the item. Although sometimes they're not representative of the scene. E.g. One has a picture of a bench with mattresses leaning up against it, the clue says that it's hidden behind some mattresses on a bench. This clue would be great, if I hadn't progressed the story. I kept searching for a bench with mattresses to no avail only to finally match up the background with the picture and find out there are no mattresses.
Also, some of the numbers are off. I was looking for a fact book that the guide claimed was book #9. I did not have book 9 in my inventory but the book was not where the guide said it was (I had already picked up the book that was there)
I gave it three stars in hope that a developer will look at it and do a quick spot check of their maps. If you're going to charge $3, at least do some quality control on it!
Exactly what it says it is.
This app is simple direct and to the point. The maps arent overly bogged down with crap. The locations are where the map says the items are located. Its a tool to utilize your ability to track facts, tapings and id cards. The official "theme song" plays in the background as you use it. The buttons are responsive. And each panel cascades open an reveals a check mark option that i wish other game "add-on" apps would utilize. An app lile this would have been fantastic for Assassins Creed : Brotherhood!! About the only real con and at a 3 dollar level, is the fact it can load slower at times. But seriously its such a miniscule issue its moot. And for the people who are requesting the map show skull locations, would be neat but a caveat to that is : would you want this mini-map guide to do everything for you?! Go play Banoi and enjoy it.
Great idea, needs filling out
This is a fantastic start... But is missing a few crucial elements to make it a fully legit offering:
* Key locations, such as the lifeguard house and the church, should be labeled.
* Locations of workbenches, fast travel locations, and key NPCs, possibly even quest givers
* I am seeing reports of incomplete and/or inaccurate data on the 2nd and 3rd maps. Perhaps this is because of the dev build that was accidentally released to the public via Steam?
Either way, this is a great idea, and one I hope more game studios will embrace in the future. Not everyone needs or wants to pay $15 for a full strat guide, but many will pay a few bucks just for a basic maps without in-depth strategy. Unfortunately, this particular offering falls just short of giving what it needs to give to be a truly functional map. Add key locations, workbenches, and revisions for accuracy and you have a 5-star app.
