Description

"Download Mage Gauntlet. The time you spent reading this review could've been much better spent playing this incredible game." -- Toucharcade.com Review

Mage Gauntlet is a classic-style action-RPG, designed from the ground up for iOS. It's inspired primarily by 90's action RPGs for the Super Nintendo, such as Legend of Zelda: LTTP and Secret of Mana. We wanted to make a fast-paced RPG that doesn't waste your time with fetch quests.

Fight and explore your way through a humorous storyline about eccentric wizards, powerful artifacts, and dangerous monsters. Find items to customize your character's strengths and weaknesses. Enjoy smooth, responsive controls and fast, satisfying combat. When you beat the game, unlock a remixed Master Mode with overwhelming enemy numbers and new secrets to uncover.

MAGE FACTS
- 84 levels (half normal, half in Master Mode)
- 86 achievements
- 110 hats (important)
- Variety of loot that adapt your character to different tactics
- 19 pets that follow you around and give different bonuses
- Quick leveling and stat system lets you customize character further
- Dash and Charge moves let you slip through enemy spell attacks

A real gem!

Mage Gauntlet is definitely the best Zelda-ish game I've tried on iOS so far. It's got great dynamic gameplay that would feel right at home in a classic Zelda game. And its variety of enemies requiring different fighting strategies is awesome! Seriously this is some of the best gameplay I've found on iOS yet, maybe the best.

The default control scheme works great! Touch the screen, and your finger becomes the control stick to slide around as needed.

And Mage Gauntlet has some good writing, with an interesting story.

And I love it that there are out-of-the-way places to search for! I love exploration, and Mage Gauntlet satisfies me in that regard.

The graphics do seem a bit dark. I'd love the SNES-type graphics, except everything looks too dark. I love games with bright green grass and such.

I am totally okay with Mage Gauntlet's difficulty curve. It definitely gets harder as it goes! Same can be said of many of the classics that inspired this.

It is true that your character doesn't get a whole lot stronger during the course of the game, but I don't think every good game needs that element.

Mage Gauntlet is not a casual game, and not a game designed to be played in short bursts. I love it!! We need more games like this.

People need to learn a thing or two...

So right off the bat, I'll say that I absolutely love this game. I'll admit that the lack of secrets in story mode were a bit disappointing, but going through master mode and finding all the secrets there is great fun. I have to laugh at all the people complaining about the difficulty though. What, did you guys think every single game on the iOS platform was a super easy cake walk? No, they aren't. Games like these actually require some effort to learn. You'll find that some enemies shoot projectiles in a certain way, or some have a charge attack that can be avoided by dashing. It all really comes down to learning how the different enemies work. And pro tip for anyone that wants a good set up: use the broken watch and the glowing sword. With this combo, killing enemies will be much easier because they're slow, you won't have to worry about projectile enemies as long as you aren't touching them, and every enemy you kill adds 2 seconds to the duration of the time spell. Also with this build, make sure you're maxing vigor and luck. The increased chance to crit with your auto attack and the ability to dash around more will help a ton later on.

Ys on the iphone

Somewhere between Ys and Zelda is the fantastic Mage Gauntlet. It has a bit of an identity crisis but this is a brutally challenging action game with slight RPG trappings. Think Devil May Cry more than Secret of Mana. You can only take three hits and levels are not short, so you learn very quickly the enemy windup and attack rhythm and time your dodges and swings appropriately. When you do it right, it is fun. Fail and it is immensely frustrating.

Bit of an identity crisis though. The RPG trappings are weak and unnecessary, only there to incentivize the truly ridiculous amount of combat you do. Stat bonuses are minuscule and equipment is almost all slight buffs with trade offs. It's what you expect from a game that values skill over numbers but holy mackerel that is a lot of fiddliness for minimal effect.

Spells are rarely doled out and are good room cleaners, which kinda makes the Mage part of the game name a bit of a misnomer. They are your primary weapon against bosses though.

Levels are too big. Have too much backtracking and secret door hunting for no gain other than completion. The story ends with an unfulfilling note right where you expect the third act to begin in a bit of a sucker punch.

Still, a fine game.
