Give the campaign a few levels, and then wow.

At first, I didn't enjoy this Cipher Prime game as much as I did their more music-based titles. Thankfully, I stuck with it despite my short attention span, and when I finished Level 3 I was hooked.

When you start playing, you immediately notice the beautifully polished graphics and are sent off on an exciting auditory journey, but the game can be kind of confusing to play. I was just clicking on random tiles and there were these inexplicable reactions and blooms, and suddenly I would beat a level. It was overwhelming and I had no idea what the rules were.

But by level 3, the difficulty ramps up enough that you actually start to fail the level. Not just once or twice, but a lot. It actually helps, because it slows down the pace of the game and forces you to make sense of the repercussions of each move, and you slowly begin to tease out the rules of the game. After that, you find that there is great depth of strategy, and that it's a really well thought out game with some interesting puzzle mechanics.

This was definitely a well-spent purchase. I would have given it four stars for the weird level design stutter in the beginning, but because the game quickly pulls out of that rut, and the graphics and sound are stunning, I'll go ahead and give it five.

Fractal: An Innovative Hexagonal Experience

Simply put, a brilliant game. Its unique and creative game dynamics combined with three modes (Campaign, Puzzle, Arcade) make this a solid puzzle game with a strong replay value. Seven bucks well spent.

That being said, since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion (OS 10.8), I can no longer play the game. When I open it up, the "Cipher Prime" logo pops up as usual, but it appears toward the upper-left of my screen, instead of the center. Then, when the main screen shows up, it has everything but the menu items at the top, so I can't click on anything to play. I have given this app 5 stars with the expectation that this will be fixed in the near future.

As a small suggestion/request, I'd like to see the icon of the game simply be the pink hexagon minus the rounded grey square behind/around it. I'd just like to see the icon look more like a Mac icon than an iPhone/iPad app.

Cheers.

Impressive, and rather original

I first played Fractal when it was published on Cipher Prime's website, and although the gameplay was unlike anything I had played before, I was hampered by the graphics. Flash and my old Laptop did not get along, especially with Fractal's particle heavy animations. However I found this on the app store on my newer laptop and had to try it. The result is nothing short of stunning. The newer version is so much crisper and fluid, and with that, I can actually enjoy this fiendishly addicting puzzle game. End result: Buy it, play it with headphones, and waste some time with it
