Useful if you understand it's limitations

I use this app because I have multiple retirement accounts I needed a place to consolidate the information. I'm a do it yourself investor so I do not use the personal capital advisors service and can't comment on them. However I can't comment on the tools for consolidation of multiple accounts. There is a good amount of data without being over or under whelmed regarding amounts in each account, returns overtime in each account or aggregate and allocation asset classes. I would give this five stars however I have about 10 retirement accounts, and at any given time one or more have an issue and are not able to sync. Normally this is an issue with the retirement count itself and not personal capital, however the feedback from personal capital via email is extremely slow and dismissive of these issues. If the accounts cannot be links successfully, this is a problem with fundamentals of the application and the rest of the application becomes worthless.

Better than Mint but still needs work

So if you are heavy into investments this app beats mint hands down. Its portfolio tracking and insights is quit good for a mobile app. Budgeting and cash flow is quite good too. Overall I like how it's not overly in your face with ads like mint. My only complaint and this goes for literally every personal financial app I've found is that it has no way to handle Managed Account investments that don't have a ticker associated. Many large company 401ks like mine include institutional managed mutual funds. They underlying investments map to big index funds like vanguard 500 etc but have no ticker as they are private managed accounts. No tool has an option to track these so I'm left with a large portion of my port not tracked leaving inaccurate reports and analysis. So the search continues, but for most I think this will be an outstanding tool.

Good idea but crashes, poor support, doesn't connect to major financial sources

I use this and Mint. This crashes a lot. Mint doesn't. Personal Capital has the more pleasant interface, with more visual panache, but there's a trade-off in bugginess and the lack of some crucial functionality.

For instance, the "checkup" section is riddled with errors. Some holdings don't appear in the right -- or any -- sector. This means the information elsewhere, such as the tactical weights, etc., are all wrong. Also, support is often slow to respond to issues.

While it's great to have everything in one central spot, the reality is that it isn't that effective if it can only give you 80% of the picture. Increasingly, it seems the part of the picture that's missing at Personal Capital is anything new and/or primarily app driven. You know, the newfangled disruptive tools. The ones that are free. For instance, Robinhood and Loyal3.

Despite many years and promises, Personal Capital is unable/unwilling to allow connections to these institutions. That's a significant disadvantage to a big demographic who uses those fee-free services. But, they remain steadfast in their unwillingness. Or their ineptitude. Either way, it's not good.
