Love it - hate speed reading.
One word at a time is surprisingly comfortable and requires no "training". It flows. At brain speed. Not eye speed. No jumping around, moving back and forth from one line to the next, skipping, skimming, rereading. I don't want to speed read unless I have to. I enjoy well-written articles, so I want to encounter each word, syntax and style - as the author intended.
If I skip over short or any words, I have to notice or anticipate them to skip them. Right? Speed reading renders reading to a task. Like any task, I get bored and space out, skipping lots. But still 92-95% comprehension.
If you just need to glance a a page to get what you need, this app is not for you. If you want to actually "read" very very quickly, without the mental and optical calisthenics of speed reading, and enjoy the piece - then give this app a try.
It works just the way it supposed to!!!
Very reliable. Other than the beauty and the simplicity of it all, my favorite feature is the time calculation for each article in my list. I love how I can know the time of each article. Using this app is one of my favorite study break activities now.
I read a lot in law school but this app really teaches me how to subvocalize when I read. I noticed a difference in my non-app reading even in my first day. This app is going places. I hope to keep updating it as the user base grows because it certainly will! As a sidenote, I don't get what everyone's fuss is about speed-reading; that's snake oil seminar crap is a joke. This app is a simple tool for reading articles that I would otherwise have to delete. It's a simple problem and a great solution. I love it!
Maybe Not “Speed Reading” But Great Quick Reading App -
This is a great app. Criticism seems in one of 2 camps. 1. This isn’t “speed reading” and 2. I can’t read that fast. I’ve taken “speed reading” classes, and they’re fine. I improved my reading speed. But it takes lots of discipline to follow their process of skimming then scanning, then going back. They didn’t suggest this for everything you read though. They also emphasize the importance of not “subvocalizing” — and that’s exactly what RQ helps you do. I have increased by speed with RQ — I just wish I had the discipline to use it more. The app does what you need. Only think it needs is the ability to sync the stats and stories to another device. Maybe Evernote integration would be nice, too.
