Gratuitous Space Battles

GSB is the ultimate space strategy game. It's a strategy / management / simulation game that does away with all the base building and delays and gets straight to the meat and potatoes of science-fiction games: The big space battles fought by huge spaceships with tons of laser beams and things going 'zap!', 'ka-boom!' and 'ka-pow!'.

In GSB you put your ships together from modular components, arrange them into fleets, give your ships orders of engagement and then hope they emerge victorious from battle (or at least blow to bits in aesthetically pleasing ways).

Gratuitous Space Battles aims to bring the over-the-top explodiness back into space strategy games. The game is for everyone who has watched big space armadas battle it out on TV and thought to themselves 'I could have done a much better job as admiral'.

This is not a game of real-time arcade twitch reflexes. GSB is about what ships you design, and what you tell them to do. Your individual ship commanders have total autonomy during the chaotic battle that unfolds. This is not a tactical game, it is a strategic one. These gratuitous space battles are not won by plucky heroes with perfect teeth, but by the geeky starship builders who know exactly what ratio of plasma-cannons to engines each ship in the fleet will need.

If fighting against a fixed fleet of enemy ships isn't your thing, then GSB also has two 'survival mode' maps. In these battles, your fleet is helplessly outnumbered by wave after wave of enemies that warp in and attack you. Your fleet's final defeat is certain, but how many enemy ships will you blast to atoms before you go down with your ship?

Your space fleet awaits!

Great game new and old iPad,

I hemmed and hawed for awhile whether to buy this game due to the price point but am very glad for the purchase now. Installed it on the New iPad and it runs smooth with all features on(I did have to restart my iPad once but that is normal fare now when putting new game apps in).

My battery ran low on the New iPad so I installed it on my iPad 1 and it also runs great but I did have to nix a few of the minor graphics settings.

I love trying out new designs and combinations of ships without having to fuss around with base building and resource collection. Since the AI ship captains and squadron leaders take care of the tactical details, it is also fun for me to only have to focus on strategic placement of my units and their general orders(like telling fighters to remember carrier units are there to repair them and they don't have to all be kamikaze fighters).

The only thing I would add to the game is a mode where you can pit your own designs against each other. It would be nice to play out battle ideas like fast missle frigates vs. slow cruisers loaded out with only plasma guns. Or fighters with only their carrier cruisers up against a fleet of frigates.

Overall though, great game! 5 stars from me with or without a custom battle mode.

Crashes a lot

Patch note: updated, played a quick battle, and it promptly crashed as soon as I hit the fleet HQ button (that pops up after the battle). Have never gotten past this box w/o crashing. wish I had known this was in Beta, had enough of those on the PC!

BTW: The link for developer web site on store page is DOA!

If you can get through the once a battle crashes is a great game. No campain included though? Tragic, should be standard like the PC version. Will add a star once its patched, and another when the campain is included. Seems to crash after every battle when I hit the fleet HQ button, sometimes I get the reward after a battle, and sometimes I get zippo after I relaunch from a crash. It crashes after EVERY battle!

Despite stars this game has GREAT future on Ipad, now work out the bugs! Is almost unplayable on an Ipad 1.

Great and unique strategy game that's just missing a few features...

Solid strategy game that is simple yet challenging and deep. Very unique gameplay with satisfying and beautiful battles that unfold.

However, for $10 it should include more campaign content, "conquest mode" or some type of skirmish/multiplayer. Add these things and it's a 5 star game for sure!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND to any strategy fan!

Update: the crashing issue seems to have been resolved with the latest patch.
