The best I've seen
This is easily the best app I've used to learn knot-tying. It uses not only animations and animated step-by-step instructions, but also videos of someone tying each knot, narrating the process as he goes. The videos are the most useful part, because they show you how to hold the rope as you're tying a knot. Before I found this app, some of the knots I tried (e.g., the alpine butterfly knot) fell apart because I couldn't control the rope. But when I viewed the video, and saw how each knot was handled, I learned how to tie it--and tie it quickly.
The videos are stored online and can be downloaded all at once, or one at a time to save space on your iPad. I only wish that the app offered more of them. The current version has only 25 knots and splices (19 knots and six splices). But that's just a wish, not a shortcoming. If this were strictly a reference app, I would expect a lot more knots. Given the educational emphasis, however, I think 25 knots and splices is an entirely appropriate number.
This is surely an essential teaching app for beginners, and maybe intermediate learners. Well worth the price.
I had no idea how huge this app was until I started downloading over wi-fi and was still waiting a half hour later. It is 285MB for only 25 knots (19 knots, 6 splices)! And that is without downloading the additional 1.5GB of video. The first animation I tried, Alpine Butterfly, crashed the app the first time I tried it although it seemed to work after that. The controls are un-responsive and sometimes take 2 or 3 taps to get them to work. The knot animations are not consistent and look like they were drawn by 25 different animators and further, not all knots even have animations or step-by-step -- just videos you have to download. On some of the knots, the drawing is so small you can't really see the over and under of the rope as the knot is tied on the small iPhone screen. Overall UI is clunky IMO. Better knot apps out there with many more knots, better interface, much smaller size, and less money.
Splicing made easy
For the first time in 50 years of sailing I feel confident in being able to splice after watching this app! Well done!
