Continuing their ongoing mission to bring you the best arcade/retro gaming action on iOS, Llamasoft presents Super Ox Wars - classic vertical scrolling shooter action at its finest.
The peaceful planet Parint has been invaded by the evil Marcabian Empire! Take off and strike back against the invaders - with the power of an ox! Two oxen, in fact - draw power from Caprichoso (the Capricious Ox) and Garantido (the Dependable Ox) and power up your ship to blast the swarming foe.
Blast your way through ten unique levels filled with challenging enemies. Adapt your ship by choosing red or blue powerups that change your shooting and defensive style. Earn high scores for each style as well as for overall score, and compare them on the Game Center leaderboards.
Super Ox Wars is another excellent Llamasoft shooter featuring the usual exemplary playability and controls. Depend on Llamasoft for the absolute best in arcade action!
Take off and strike with shining star and blazing heart of oxen!
Cram to Understand
I like to think of myself as a hardcore player. When introduced to the challenges set by the achievements, I jumped at the chance. Sadly, after an hour of play, I still don't know what this game's definition of "pick up" is. After playing many games and picking up very few of the symbol I was trying to avoid, the after-action report claimed I grabbed almost as many as the symbol I was attempting to stock up on. I appreciate games that leave players to their own devices, but I cannot see what constitutes "picking up" either a heart or star. Support for either side in the "war" is unaffected by the score you get for each faction, which is disappointing and odd. I could score 100,000 for blue and 500 for red, but unless I succeed in the cryptic pick-ups element, all is for naught. Not knowing what I'm doing wrong is super-frustrating.
That said, this is still probably my least favorite Llamasoft game so far. It's a competent shooter, but it's seemingly way too conventional when compared to Minter's other work on iOS. Back to Five-a-day and Gridrunner, I suppose. Perhaps my feeling will change once I've cracked the star/heart nut.
Llamasoft does a polarity shooter!! yaay!
Didn't think Jeff Minter (Llamasoft) could 1-up "Gridrunner" and "Five-a-Day" on iOS, but he has... this is a classic shmup fan's dream. Controls are spot on, learning curve is perfect, has that "one more play and I could get farther" addiction, great sounds, colorful graphics, bullets *everywhere* once you get the hang of the semi-IKARUGA style of powering up. Awesome new game and a no-brainer purchase at even double or triple the cost.
Another homerun from Llamasoft
Another day, another killer retro-gaming experience from Llamasoft. Super Ox wars is a vertical shooter with a color-matching mechanic similar to Ikaruga. It's full of the trademark Llamasoft neon psychedelia and classic old school gameplay. I found it incredibly hard to break away from it to write this review because the "just one more game" factor is very strong with this one. My favorite from Llamasoft since Gridrunner.
