Display Menu

By Milch im Gemüsefach

Open the Mac App Store to buy and download apps.

Display Menu shows a status item in your menu bar that lets you change your display settings with a single click.
Depending on your display setup, you can set the screen resolution, toggle mirroring, adjust the refresh rates, and access the HiDPI modes.
This free version of Display Menu does not support the two small display Modes of the Retina MacBook Pro.

What's New in Version 1.4

We have added a "Detect Displays" menu item for those of you who regularly work with VGA-based displays (e.g., projectors). We also decided to remove the "Recommend" menu item. When the software was new, we wanted you to be able to tell your friends about it. Now that so many people use Display Menu every day, we found that it is not really needed anymore.

“Best" of the Bunch

I’ve tried pretty much all the display resolution applications that have Demos available and keep coming back to this one. It is simple and reliable, which is what counts. Display Maestro does pretty much the same thing, but IMHO lacks a little finess. I love the look of Pupil, but when you connect to an external monitor, it seems like Pupil decides it wants to pick the available resolutions based on the other monitor and it lacks the ability to turn toggle the mirroring. This application has separate listings for each connected monitor and the ability to toggle mirroring. I also tried SwitchResX, which is powerful and allows me to creat custom screen resolutions for some of the more unusual projectors I have used at work, but it is overly complicated compared to this application and although I keep trying SwitchResX for that power, I just come back to this application.

There are only two things I wish were available:

1. A preference to turn off resolutions I will never use. I mean, does anyone use 800x600?
2. A menu item for screen rotation.

Very usefull but need to be fixed for Retina native way resolution support

This is very useful app. But you need to know, that same resolution chosen via System Settings and via Display Menu is not the same.
In a fact for retina displays, if you chose "Looks like 1680x1050" mode via System Settings than it will works another way than using "Display Menu 1680x1050»

Apple made nice optimization, so using «System Settings» mode 1680x1050 will be hardware scaled to 3360 x 2100 what is much better than just set 1680x1050 resolution via Display Menu.
You can check it out by making full screen screenshots Shift+Cmd+3 and compare image resolutions in different modes.
I hope developers will fix this and make it works as System Settings do.

So in result, if you use Display Menu for non 2560x1600 resolutions, you will have no antialiasing. And if you use System Settings, there will be nice antialiasing.
I prefer to use this app for 2560x1600 resolution what is really nice, and switch back to normal resolution via System Settings only and not via Display Menu.

The only app I’ve ever rated

This unleashes the true power of the retina screens on Apple’s Macbook Pros.

Sadly this should be a feature built into the settings on Mac OS, but it isn’t. Apple dumbs down the retina macbooks capabilities and this unlocks it for your enjoyment. Its simple, sleek, and does what it says. I will never turn back.

For editing photos and using Logic Pro X, etc, this is a must-have app. If the developer sees this review I would like a paypal address to donate for this app. It’s great, and until today had no idea this existed.
