This tour has 140+ commentary points!
Maui's most famous and spectacular drive. The Road to Hana is all about the journey and adventure to get to Hana and its is recommended to continue past Hana as far as Kipahulu and the Seven Sacred Pools. The road has 620 curves and 59 bridges, 46 of which are single lane along its 68 mile length. The road hugs between the rocky coastline as it weaves in and around ravines and gulches on the side of Haleakala. The landscape is mostly tropical rainforest with many spectacular waterfalls along the way.
The are many excellent stops along the route and GyPSy will help you decide which are the must-do stops along the way. There are some excellent swimming beaches along the route too so be prepared. Other striking features include bamboo forests, black sand beaches and lava rock formations.
GyPSy will be your guide and entertain you all the way. As travel around the backside of Haleakala is prohibited by most rental car contracts, our tour returns back to Paia with all new commentary to keep you fascinated with stories of Hawaiian culture.
This app is not just a directory. It provides a guided tour experience. You will feel like a local expert is showing you the best of everything as you drive. There is no need to read a guide book as you drive, or to remember where to press play and stop on a CD. GyPSy knows where you are and plays automatically.
Once downloaded, the tour requires no data exchange to operate and activate the commentary points, so you will not have any data costs. Just download the app from your Wi-Fi network at home before you leave or use free Wi-Fi at the airport, your hotel or any other location.
** Important: If you are downloading the tour to an iPad it must be a 3G model or higher. If the iPad is wireless only - it will not automatically activate the commentary which requires GPS function. Any iPhone 3G, 4 or 5 will activate just fine.
Note: Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

A tour guide in your car!!
This app is simply phenomenal. My wife and I gust did the road to Hana on Wednesday. The Tour went point by point as you hit the GPS waypoints. The tour guide told you what you were about to see and what to hit and what you could miss. All and all we still spent close to 13 hours doing the tour. But we could have missed the key points if we didn't use this app. It was really one of the coolest things I've used on my iPhone. Also, on the return trip down, which was done in total darkness, since we finished the last item on the tour at 6:30, we were able to listen to an entire history of Hawaii which stopped and started as you hit the waypoints down, so we were able to talk and converse in the lapses in the story. The story finished at the bottom as we hit Paia. Amazing App, liked it alot. If I had one suggestion to the creators, and it's very minor, it would be nice if there was an index of waypoints by name, instead of just a marker on a map that you can touch, that you could tap to rehear that portion. If there was one maybe I missed it. But overall- loved it a must have on the road to Hana.
Road to Hana
This app was absolutely amazing! It completely made the trip to Hana. Well done! Cued us early on stops along the way and provided great commentary, stories and facts...even gave some pointers on sharp turns before we approached. I had purchased the Maui Revealed book, but on this road trip used the app over the book. It hit all the stops I had marked in the book, but I didn't get car sick reading and my husband as the driver was as informed on all the potential stops. Since we had the app we were able to decide together if we had time and/or wanted to make one stop over some of the others along the route. My only suggestion would be to pack a car charger with you to Maui. We disabled all features on the phone and did everything possible to preserve the battery. We did make it to Hana, the National Park and about 20mins of the road back, but missed some interesting facts on the drive home. I can't have imagined doing this trip without the app and highly highly recommend it!!
A must have app
Buy a cd and spend $20 for something that you will lose or forget if you ever come back to maui.
Buy this app and have it forever. Well worth the $5. The commentary is great. My wife said it was like having your uncle who lived in Hawaii for the last 20 years in the back seat telling you all the cool places to stop.
3 points to get the most out if this app:
1. Buy or bring a windshield mount for your iPhone. It helps to see the screen without having to look down. The arrows give you visual clues when the guide will be taking again.
2. Car charger is a must. Leave it plugged in the entire time except when you get out of the vehicle. Don't leave valuables in your car EVER.
3. When you pick out your rental car, make sure it has Bluetooth. Pair your phone with the car and play the audio through the speakers.
Leave early (Paia by 8:00) and stop at least all 5 'highlights'.
Thanks to the developer and commentator for such a great app!!
