Fun with bad developer decisions
Very addicting. My main gripe is that the game leans a great deal on luck of which the AI seems to have a never-ending supply. Nearly every round I play I'll constantly strike out on terrible cards while the AI gets every combination of good cards possible and always seems to know what's coming. Also the AI plays each hand perfectly and never makes mistakes like a human would, meaning if you make a mistake you better hope you get very lucky.
Despite the card types adding "strategy" very often there's a "best way" to use the cards and you just repeat those same patterns over and over. Basically if I win at all instead of feeling like I outsmarted my opponent or even earned it I just feel like I got lucky with good cards and the game finally gave me a break and let me win.
Also as others have said, the expensive traits make matches unfair quickly and are overpriced. This also desperately needs turn-based online multiplayer. Playing with other people remotely would make this a must have. Kudos for the large range of game types that emerge later on.
Great so far!
I've played about 25 matches and so far this game is great. The app is beautifully designed with great artwork and an easy and intuitive interface. The games are short, which is nice when you are commuting or have a few minutes of downtime and need a filler. So far the matches have been fun and exciting, and even though I don't usually enjoy games with a high degree of luck, this has kept me engaged deciphering the strategy and card probabilities while the short game time makes games lost solely due to bad luck acceptable. There are in-app purchases but so far I haven't had to buy any to keep progressing in the game; the moment that happens this game will receive a low rating from me. Developers, please look at:
- the ability to randomly decide who goes first in a pass and play game rather than it always being the same player.
- adding a place somewhere in the app where people can just click when they want to leave a review.
Fun concept marred by issues
At its core, Dead Man's Draw is a fun game; it's got some interesting mechanics, and it's genuinely enjoyable to play. The game gives the player a base set of rules, and then modifies them slightly for different scenarios to give the player a challenge. That's the good news. The bad news is the game unfortunately rife with micro transactions. To Stardock's credit, the game is not pay to win, but it is 'pay to do better, faster'. In addition, it falls into the FarmVille hole of shaming its users into trading Facebook advertising for in game abilities. It should be noted that those abilities are not unique to Facebook messages, but they do speed up the game.
The last point is it's riddled with crashes. I'm currently crashing every battle, making no forward progress.
The final word? I wish I'd have paid for it, just so I know who I'd need to ask for a refund.
