Pretty bad, right out the gate.
I installed this app on our iPad mini for our three-year-old daughter. The app kept crashing when I tried to verify my purchase with the stylus eraser. The stylus turned out to be a little too big for my daughter's hand to write with naturally, too. This is unfortunate since she's supposed to be learning how to write, hard enough with a writing utensil she can actually grip.
As far as the app goes, it's pretty bad. You have to press unnaturally hard in order for the iPad to register the pencil's application, and as a consequence, my daughter has to go over the same line over and over. I'd like to think that I am decently skilled at writing letters myself, and even I had to go over the same line several times because the app wasn't picking up my writing movements.
Another annoying thing is that if you do make an incorrect writing movement, the app takes an annoyingly long time to reset. You have to wait a second or two in order to try the movement again and when you have to do it over and over since the stylus is not sensitive enough it becomes annoyingly aggravating. Not surprisingly, my daughter lost interest after about ten minutes of frustration.
Mostly wonderful app
The app took forever to download, but just stay patient with it. Once it was on the ipad I had no problems unlocking the content with the eraser part of the stylus. My children, 3 and 6, have had no problems with how to play on the content. It's a lot like the content on the Leap Pad game so that gets them excited.
I wish there was a way to go in and practice specific letters or shapes that need more work and I wish there was a way to get progress updates or something similar to the way LeapFrog does on the Learning Path with their other games.
Just FYI, if you need to correct a profile (misspelled name in our case) you have to go into the settings menu on the iPad. This is not within the game itself. At first I found that annoying, but now I'm glad that my kids can't get in and change anything on their profile without my help.
Unlocking is the most frustrating process
What a great idea- in theory. But seriously, the unlocking process is the absolute worst experience. What a pile. We had such trouble with it, we emailed the company. Their two "solutions": 1) a written description of the audio directions i had heard no less than 75 times 2) Purchase the $15 app in addition to the $15 stylus i purchased at retail- sure. There are so many options that could unlock a product like this. "Stamping" a stylus to an iPad screen until you get carpal tunnel is about the worst option available i can think of. i've had many great leap frog experiences- this one is pretty bad. It took me 35 minutes to get it to work, and i just kept at it because i reached the point of utter frustration- as I had already returned and re-bought a Mr. Pencil wondering if the first was defective. The app is great, and now my daughter is thrilled it is unlocked, but for the love, find a new way to make that happen.
