Welcome to Waterdeep, the City of Splendors! A city run by a secret society of masked Lords who rule with shady back-door dealings and unmatched political power. In Lords of Waterdeep players will play as one of these masked Lords and will need to recruit adventurers to go out and complete quests for them. The more quests they complete, the more control and influence they have over the city.

Players can expand the city by purchasing buildings that will open up new opportunities within the city walls. Intrigue cards can be used to help the player and may also either help or hinder their fellow Lords in their quest to become the supreme ruler of Waterdeep!

Lords of Waterdeep is a turn-based strategy game played in 8 rounds and can be played against AI or with up to 5 human players. Players take turns assigning their agents to do their bidding, whether it is to recruit new adventurers to their tavern or purchase a new building for the city. Points and resources are gained by completing quests, playing Intrigue cards, constructing new buildings or having other players utilize the buildings you have constructed. At the end of the 8 rounds bonus points are awarded and the player with the most points at the end wins the game.

A Little Expensive

I had hoped that this game would at least involve rolling dice and fighting monsters. It does not. You play one of the nominal Lords of Waterdeep, which is much less interesting than it sounds, because you can do nothing with them and all you get is a picture. Your job is to collect adventurers and do one of 60 or so different quests within eight rounds, while you compete against either the AI or another player. It is a simple turn-based game where you collect one or two fighters or wizards from the tavern each round and then eventually assign them to a quest when you get enough. Once you have the requirements to do the quest, it is an automatic completion. No hacking and slashing at all. At the end, your points are totaled against the other players to see who wins.

There is not much drama. The quests don't have much of a description. They are one-liners. There's no story here, no character development, ...nothing.

In short, save your time if you're looking for something with exciting characters. This is all turn-based strategy and luck of the draw. The price of this game is higher than its value.

Great game. Well implemented.

Overall this game is very well done. If you like the original board game, you'll be very happy with this. However, I'd like to see a couple improvements made. I'd really like to see a per move timer, instead of just a total game timer. Also an unlimited time would be nice. Timers don't work well for games that go on for days because the person who gets stuck with their turn overnight, loses a lot time. Also, a more compact game board would be nice. I realize they faithfully reproduced the original board, and that's great, but an option for a more compact board would make it easier to see things. The original board is unnecessarily spread out, and requires a lot of scrolling around.

Great game with one horrible bug

I've been playing this a lot of late, and I really enjoy it, but there is a bug with online games where, when you launch the app to play your turn, a screen saying "Connecting to Server" covers the window and never goes away. It's pretty clear the app is connected, as you can hear the last few moves playing out. But something prevents that screen from going away. The only way I've found to get around it is to force-quit the app and re-start it. It connects quickly after that, but it gets pretty tiresome.

I've contacted the developers about this bug but received no response. It's hard to imagine they aren't aware of it unless they don't play it at all, but the app hasn't been updated in over a year, so it would seem they've abandoned it.
