Powerful tool, elegant and solid
This remote access software is among the best I've used on any platform. Quality design, extremely powerful, updated regularly and gives me the keyboard commands I need. Best of all the tool gets out of the way visually to enable productive work while away from my computers.
Beats even reliable LogMeIn… mostly anyway
I’m honestly amazed that the developers have managed to cram VNC into this app, because it’s freaking amazing, especially since it auto adapts to network conditions. Sometimes it gets the rendering wrong though, because the toolbars or the menu on my Mac running Yosemite are sometimes blurry or black or transparent, but other than that, it’s been pretty great. Ok, the transparent app toolbars aren’t good, they’re annoying. But it feels faster than LogMeIn on a reasonably fast network, simply because the gestures are incredible time savers. I haven’t had an issue with the app having any of these issues on a local network, but I do get occasional slowdowns even on LTE so maybe it’s an issue of the app not being able to handle too much network packet loss on cell connections?
Anyway, I love the gestures I can make and do with the app, and I only wish that other apps did them as fantastically well. It almost makes it better than using a Mac normally, ALMOST. If the iPad was a bit bigger, it would definitely be a contender for an alternative input method, because the gesture interface is THAT good. With a bluetooth keyboard, it turns into bliss, as it supports the command keys (though I wish it forwarded the special keys too, but that might be a limitation on the access to the bluetooth keyboard)
On the minus though, if you have a high res screen, you can basically kiss responsiveness goodbye especially if the entire screen is refreshing, because even with the adaptive mode, it’s still not quite as good as LogMeIn, simply because it has to transmit color pixels (at least on the Mac, haven’t tried with Windows) compared to LogMeIn, which can do grayscale. But these are fortunately rare occasions where I require the full screen to do work. And it’s also rare for someone to have a 2560x1440 or 4K resolution. But nonetheless, it would be great if the adaptive mode was a bit smarter to switch to grayscale. I know that that isn’t a mode normally supported by the Mac VNC, but nonetheless it is a great feature that LogMeIn has that trumps this app.
This app also doesn’t do remote sound, which LogMeIn does, but this doesn’t affect me and I suspect few people are actually using that feature on LogMeIn. Nonetheless, when you need it, you really need it, so there’s that.
