Today a child died of cancer. He played a game on his iPad called Game of War, where he was on a team with people he had never met.
I found out when I logged into the game this morning. I have never heard of him, never spoken to him, but someone asked if I could send one of my army to camp in an open area to pay respect.
So I did. And what I saw amazed me more than anything has in a long time. This is a virtual game of war, where you join an alliance to defeat other alliances. Where politics are practiced to find resources, find allies to befriend your alliance, and destroy the cities others are building against you.
But what I saw...
On this game map... A map of part of a world, where forests, hills, plains, swamps and mountains should be...
What I saw were thousands of individual camps, each a different person from around the world. Filling the screen wherever I scrolled. Thousands in this one Kingdom, where I hear the same is being done in 12 other kingdoms.
A child none of us has met or ever heard of has died of cancer, while playing a Game of War, and brought strangers from around the world together in unity. We are all faceless and nameless to each other. But we all camp together in a virtual world of war to remember someone we never met.
My sympathies and prayers go to his family.
His name was Death Terror.
A lot of grinding in this game. The game is fun but as you level up higher, each buildings takes longer to upgrade. You will go from 5 mn wait time to hours and finally days. Let's not mention you risked getting attacked by other players making you restart all over again. The best choice is to join an alliance, and ask them to help you upgrade. Alliance also offer protection since higher ranked alliance won't get attacked often. Sometimes other alliances will join forces to control a section of the kingdom which is pretty huge. The game is very detailed and there's a lot of politics in the game. People take it a bit too seriously.
I gave it 4 star on how detailed and addictive it is. It could've been 5 stars if weren't for the fact that you got to pay money in order to be at the top. Nothing would be wrong but everything is expensive in this game. $100 for a couple of in-game gold? Not really worth it if you ask me. No wonder people take this game seriously after investing so much it only makes sense. On the plus side if you join an alliance with a leader that do spend money, you get extra gifts that you wouldn't have had you been a regular player. In conclusion joining an alliance is a must and actually make the game much more fun. The way people interact in the game really make the game for me. It's worth a download and you spend a lot of time in it. Very good and detailed game
Fun at first, then pointless
Like everyone else, I thought this game was incredible when it was released. More strategic than Clash of Clans and more detailed. The build rate and upgrades were exciting and I couldn't put down my phone for two days. Then, like every game of this type, it slowed down once I became too high-leveled. Worse though is that the rest of the game doesn't provide enough motivation to deal with the slow pace.
Here's a secret: You will NOT become the top player unless you drop some serious real money. Even worse, you will get consistently steam-rolled by stronger players and alliances that were beta-testers and have 20 days of playing behind them. Also frustrating to some is that there aren't any serious consequences to being defeated. Your city and buildings cannot be destroyed. All that happens is you lose your supply of resources, whatever city defenses you have, troops, and maybe your hero. The only real consequence is that it takes a while to restock all your supplies and rebuild your army. Then it's back to Groundhog Day.
If you want a social experience, then this game will still satisfy. The Alliance structure encourages people to work together. For strategy game enthusiasts though, it's too simplistic. The game doesn't really seem to go anywhere or accomplish anything more than being a game-oriented chat room. Some may still find it fun months from now, but after over a week of playing, I'm too bored to continue.
