Fantastic Tool

This program is the reason I switched to Apple computers. In the past, I’ve used multiple kinds of DAW software on a PC and three different kinds of stand alone, digital multitrack recorders. I’ve also recorded in a semi-professional studio. With all the other ways of recording I’ve used, I felt like the process of recording was holding me back. Garage band is so easy to use that I can just play and have it sound decent. I wouldn’t say that I’ve been able to get radio quality recordings, but my garage band recordings completely blow away everything I’ve done in the years prior. Recently the update with the realistic drum machine and the additional sounds has been fantastic. I still end up having a real person record drums, but while I’m getting the song down, I use the drum machine. It really helps to map out the dynamics and allows me to put more emotion into my playing, because it’s not just a straight beat. I wouldn’t feel uncomfortable using the drum machine in my final mix….I just prefer to collaborate with other people. If you want to be a musician that records their own music, rather than a sound engineer who happens to be a musician, this program works really well.

i have made a complaint on the garageband app but...

the only reason i had made the complaint is because of an instrument not recording/playing correctly when played in a certain manner, very minor issue. which i called and explained the problem at hand. they got me directed to the right people. which were very respectful and listened in detail. it seems to be they are correcting it asap. they seemed very sincere. now i rarely use garageband because i have top of the line DAW recording software that i use, which i bought and wasnt cheap. but i can tell you if your looking to record voacls and just lay a track down real quick that sounds pro. garageband is a win win. i mean it comes free and for a small $4.99 upgrade you get a ton. you can still make studio quailty on garageband. im sure their update will fix the small issue. really though the garageband app is great for anyone starting off making music and wants to sound good.

If you already own it, you’ll have to buy it again

I already owned Garage Band. It came pre-installed with my rMBP. I recently upgraded to Yosemite and experienced a ton of issues, so I wiped my Macbook and started fresh with a clean install. I re-installed iMovie and iPhoto with no problem but was just charged $4.99 for Garage Band. Apparently, GarageBand was “re-engineered” between my first and subsequent installations of Yosemite. It had a $4.99 fee for “additional content” in the past but it also said I was already entitled to it after the first Yosemite installation. So I clicked the $4.99 button expecting the App Store to tell me I already purchased the app. Instead, I was charged $4.99. I was refunded the amount, minus the local sales tax which could not be refunded. Let this be a word of caution to other users, if you own a version of Garage Band prior to the October 2014 version, get ready to pay to reinstall it if you ever have to do so. There is a reason it’s in the top ten paid apps in the app store.
