What's New in Version 2.2.3
Fixed navigation bug in Ida's Red Dream.
I never write reviews for apps. It's not that I'm a snob that is always dissatisfied with every single app, just that apps come and go (especially games) and most have not been intriguing enough to keep me interested for very long. Monument Valley is quite the spectacle. See title.
I'm not an architect but I've always been so fascinated with great architecture, and this game has all of that. It's so mesmerizing with all the twists and turns, and how your eye can perceive so much more if you look at a different angle, or perhaps move to see a perspective you would have never thought to see. It's complicated yet pleasantly minimalist at the same time. The music adjusts with Ida's every move, yet harmony is not disturbed; it is actually enhanced. You even have an option to take a screenshot of the end of the level, a beautiful backdrop you just finished. This is such a brilliant adventure puzzle that evokes such emotion from its unique story and the magic you feel when you finish a level.
If you're on the fence because of the price of the app, don't be. I bet some of you have paid great amounts of in-app purchases (I'm looking at you, Candy Crush players that couldn't wait another 20 minutes) just to get an extra life to play a level that - let's be real - you most likely lost. Monument Valley is well worth it, you can't lose, just keep going until you figure out the puzzle. It will change your life!
Beautiful and clever.
I really like puzzles and since jumping on the iOS bandwagon I've actively searched them out and purchased quite a few. Most disappoint. Many more are "ok". It is rare to have a game that is visually pleasing, not violent (I have small children and they are naturally curious about every game on my iPad), and not so completely formulaic that I quickly loose interest.
This app delivers. While I will admit that by level 10 I'd figured out the pattern (and thus I may not purchase the add-on), it is beautifully done and compelling enough to engage my interest to the end. This almost *never* happens.
UPDATE: My son (age 5) recently discovered this and has been working his way through the game. Because of this, I went ahead and purchased the additional levels. They are similar in style to the previous set with a few clever added elements. I'm not sure I can recommend them, however, for two reasons. First, I'm finding that the motion of the animations is a little queasy. Second, they continue the same pattern and thus aren't really challenging for an adult audience. I still think the game is wonderful and I am sure that my son will enjoy the additional levels so I'm glad I got them, just not sure I can honestly recommend them for other adults.
Best Puzzle Game For iPhone
This game is AMAZING! I always complain when I'm looking for puzzle games on the App Store and stupid games that aren't even puzzle games (like candy crush) pop up. WHO WANTS TO PLAY THAT CRAP? Anyway, those games are stupid. Wastes of time and money. If you're gonna contribute to the pollution through charging your battery, you might as well enjoy it with this game.
This game has everything I look for in a puzzle. It basically explodes your mind and then slowly pieces it back together. It is incredibly well made, the art and sound are amazing, and it is extremely enjoyable.
If you've read this far, you may be wondering why I gave it four stars. The answer is simple. It's too short! Especially for the price! You can pay extra for more levels, but I feel like I already payed extra. I don't want to have to pay even more extra!
All in all, I'd say this is a must-play game, but it isn't a must-buy game. Take your friend's phone from them for an hour or two, and play this game all the way through. You will be extremely glad you did. Just make sure you pop in a good pair of earphones before you play!
