Look for other ColorTRUE Aware Apps
Unlike your laptop or desktop operating system, iOS mobile apps do not have system wide color management capabilities. Therefore, each app must apply color profiles individually. For this reason, X-Rite has created the ColorTRUE Aware Partner Program. We are currently collaborating with other app developers to allow them to seamlessly access your ColorTRUE profile so any app can display colors accurately and consistently. ColorTRUE Aware apps will be color managed once you create a profile with ColorTRUE. Just look for the ColorTRUE Aware logo for compatibility.
So help us spread the word by telling your favorite app developers you want them to be ColorTRUE Aware! App Developers: Visit xritephoto.com/colortrueSDK to request our ColorTRUE Software Developers Kit (SDK).

See Accurate Colors on iPhone and iPAD Photos
ColorTrue is Xrite's extension of its color calibration products for computer monitors and printers to the screens on iPhones and iPADs. Professional and prosumer photographers know about the benefits of accurate PC and Mac monitors when manipulating photos in color-aware programs like Adobe Photoshop for presentation on the monitor or a projector or printing color-matched WYSIWYG photos without wasting photo paper and ink, and in color matching monitors on the same or different computer or laptop. Of course, for a printer, it requires having a printer that uses ICC profiles, such as pro-level photo printers. Although manipulating a photo on an iPhone or iPAD without seeing it on a calibrated iPhone or iPAD screen will print badly on any printer, because sRGB embedding is still present in the photo and is read by the printer. It also requires having Xrite monitor calibration hardware, such as the ColorMunki Display, to rest against the monitor screen and measure a series of color palettes to generate an ICC profile for the computer monitor. Without it, it won't work. What is nice about the ColorMunki Display is that it is small enough to rest on an iPhone 4 or larger screen. Color calibration devices from other companies may not fit an iPhone screen.
After installing ColorTrue on your iPhone or iPAD, you use the same ColorMunki Display connected to your computer's USB port to color profile your iPhone or iPAD screen. Unfortunately, ColorTrue is a pioneering app, and there are currently no other color-aware apps other than ColorTrue available yet for the iPhone or iPAD. ColorTrue is a color-aware photo viewer that reads the color profile embedded in the photos taken by your camera and lets you view them in accurate color and lighting. Photos in ColorTrue can be viewed in calibrated mode at different whitepoint settings or as the photo will look on a printer. It also lets you view the photo in uncalibrated mode, where you can compare the difference between your iPhone or iPAD screen and the camera in your iPhone or iPAD and the true colors. The calibrated and uncalibrated images in ColorTrue can be so different, that you will believe the app does not work, but it does. It also shows that adjusting photos using camera apps and photo apps on an uncalibrated iPhone or iPAD screen will only make things worse.
The author of this review compared photos taken with a pro NIKON DSLR that were copied to the iPhone and then viewed in ColorTrue on the iPhone and simultaneously on the calibrated PC monitor. The photos looked nearly identical in calibrated mode, but significantly different on the uncalibrated iPhone screen using the iPhone photo viewer or uncalibrated mode in ColorTrue. This was then repeated using a photo shot by the iPhone camera that was copied to the PC. With the iPhone in front of the PC monitor displaying the same photo in Photoshop and both facing the author, the photo looked nearly identical in ColorTrue calibrated mode D65 whitepoint on the iPhone as it did on the PC monitor D65 whitepoint. Voila! Matched colors. However, that same photo viewed in the uncalibrated mode in ColorTrue on the iPhone screen or in the stock photo viewer in the iPhone, looked much too blue compared to the photo on the PC monitor.
There will be variations due to iPhone or iPAD version, screens, and iPhone or iPAD cameras, but viewing the photo in ColorTrue calibrated mode will match the same photo on a calibrated computer monitor at the same whitepoint settings. Before you adjust the lighting of your subject or the whitebalance on your iPhone or iPAD camera, take a test photo and look at it in ColorTrue. Then you will know what that photo will look like on the calibrated computer monitor.
If you don't care about accurate, matched colors or have a need for them with the photos you shoot with your camera, iPhone, or iPAD, and "it's off; too much red, yellow, or blue; but it's close" is good enough for you, then you don't need ColorTrue or color calibration hardware, but for those who do care, and may show photos from their DSLR displayed on their iPAD to clients, ColorTrue and color calibration hardware is a necessity.
