The Blocks of the Century
A truly fantastic app. I love the narration, it's almost better than the game itself. And the simplicity of the game is phenomenal. Honestly, it's the best game I've possibly ever played. It's addictive, though not in an annoying way. It's very intellectual- The geometry and physics of it are really puzzling, it truly makes you think.
My only complaint, would be the lack of more levels. I suppose it's one of those one-hit-wonder sort of things, but it felt like it needed more... Like it shouldn't have ended there, like there was more to the story. Maybe it's hard to get the narrator back, and I understand the process of these type of games must be truly difficult, but I loved Thomas, James, Chris, Laura, and all the rest... I hate to see them end here. It feels like a cliff. A gap in their journey, that is in need of fulfillment. Those were my thoughts, anyway. I'm just a lowly 11-year-old though, so I suppose that I may not understand the complexity of the game-making world. The best game I've played yet though- So keep up the good work and hopefully keep up the creative Thomas characters, and make them alive again!!! They deserve the five-star-rating!!!$
Frustrating and fun
All in all this is a fun game, but I'm rating it 3 stars because it isn't worth the money. It's a platformer with some puzzle elements. The characterization and story line are fun but spread too thin. The main thing is that I never turn the game off satisfied. Only frustrated. Some of the levels have difficult sections which would be fine except that the game has this nasty habit of making unforgivably hard platforming sections to get through repeat five or six times. If that wasn't bad enough, it mocks you by making it so that if you get through 5/6 platforms, and mess up on the sixth you have to start over. It gets particularly nasty when gravity puzzles are implemented. Also the controls could have handled better. Many puzzles require you put one character stand on the edge of a ledge, then change characters, but most of the time the game interprets an attempt to change characters as an attempt to walk off said ledge and start over. I've quit more times because of this than anything. Finally, there is a character who can double jump, except the game has a really we did idea of when it is/isn't appropriate to do so. So sometimes you'll make leaps of faith onto platforms only to find that the game decided you didn't deserve a double jump that time, so you fall to your death.
In summary, there is a fine line between challenging and frustrating.
Very cool game
I really enjoyed the style and feel of this narrative driven platformer. It's definitely a gamer's game, with lots of little references to pop culture and video games in general. Although it's not super challenging, and the level design isn't groundbreaking, many of the areas are cleverly constructed and the pacing of the game feels right. I did notice in this version on my iPad that achievements only appeared to unlock at the beginning of the game, though when I checked in the Game Center they were becoming unlocked as I progressed. Also, about two thirds of the way in I began to have serious issues with my mifi controller, where the game would suddenly get stuck pushing me in one direction or jumping repeatedly, even when I switched to just iPad controls. I had to reset the game completely and unsync my controller to alleviate this, finishing the game with touch controls only. It doesn't keep this game from being a very cool little platformer that is easy to recommend! Maybe in the future the devs will come through and patch some of these minor issues.
