Great game for IOS, just needs some improvements
I waited to play Dragon Quest IV on IOS first before getting this, and overall, that was a better port. However, about 5 hours in, I am pleased so far. First, I'd like to say that people should stop complaining about the lack of voice acting in this version, because it is the Japanese version. It really shouldn't be a factor. Also, the synth sound actually works better for a mobile device in my opinion.
This version actually has a couple of advantages over the PS2. First, the skill allocation menu makes it much easier to smartly allocate your skill points when leveling up. In the old version, it was a blind allocation, meaning if you didn't save your points right, you could end up one point away from a skill that could be helpful, and yet have to wait a whole other level to get it. This feature is really helpful. Second, this game is well suited to grinding, and a mobile device makes a great platform to play this sort of game.
I will say, however, that those who have complained about the frame rate are right. The slowdown is definitely noticeable, especially if you've played the original. Because of this, I must give it 4 stars. Overall, a good buy.
Please remove the bandana in SHT!!
After playing this game for a while it noticed a few things. First of all this is the Japanese version of the game with english subtitles. Most already know that the music and voice acting won't be in this and not just because it's a port, just because it's the Japanese version. One main improvement of this version is the auto save and quick save function so you don't have to quit a dungeon and go all the way back to a church to save. The animations are still good as the ps2 version which is great. However, the Japanese version of the hero does not remove his bandana when he gets into super high tension! As I said in my previous review, I bought this game because it reminded me of DBZ. That small feature sold the game for me. Please bring it back! Now off that tangent, the music and no voice acting is no longer a problem to me. You can get use to it over time. This is one of the best RPGs out there and it is very convenient to have on your phone do buy it!
Beautiful, but ARGH!
Playing this game on 1 yr old (bought new) with latest iOS. The further into the game I go, the greater the frequency of crashes. Five minutes of play and it crashes, then takes another three to load from autosave. Beautiful graphics & great story, but a game of this level /cost should work flawlessly on iOS. Another enterprising company could clean up by releasing a less buggy clone or similarly themed game. Every other app I run on my iPad runs without crashing-- why not DQVIII? Nearly unplayable. Recommend consumers wait until Square irons out the bugs, or shop elsewhere. UPDATE: Game crashes every single time I open it after every monster encounter. I want my money back-- cannot make any progress at all. I'd give it 1 & 1/2 stars if I could-- this is a serious deal-breaker. SE, why are you short-changing your Apple fans? FF7 & Square computer-based ports all seem to be Windows programs that require a Steam account, which isn't the worst thing out there but your ports don't improve on new architecture; the "charm" of retro game experience doesn't have to include seriously pixilated graphics & whittled-down audio, crappy frame-rates & crashes.
