Serious Production Tool Now
I had held off on reviewing IMPC Pro because it was not quite like the old hardware I used to play with. The latest updates have changed that. No matter what app I use (Gadget, Animoog, DrumJam, Samplr, Sunrizer, Ampkit, etc.), I find myself capturing the audio and loading it into IMPC Pro. The sound quality and fun of chopping up your own audio is just so compelling. It is now similar to playing with the classic hardware Akai is famous for. I still want improvements, but I will no longer just simply gripe about the app!
I am on an IPad 2 and have had overall good stability with the app. Inter app audio and Audiocopy are directly supported. So is direct sampling into the app. Thanks to open-in, you can use Audioshare to load audio into Audiocopy which is great. You can even load your own created sliced loops into a real MPC. Still needs midi, sample layering and a few more bugs removed. But it is a serious production tool now!
Edit- The recent December 2015 update causes crashes whenever I try to edit a sample. This defeats the entire purpose of the app. Using iOS 9. Please fix!
Predictably disappointing crap...
Not sure why I thought this would be any better than the previous MPC app. This is a terribly executed app that could not be more clunky and takes no advantage whatsoever of the possibilities offered by the touch screen interface. These sorts of releases are unfortunately typical of well established music hardware companies. Like most reproductions of preexisting gear, there are no surprises and the design seems intentionally inferior, as if to bolster the myth that there is no substitute for the real thing. The truth is that the MPC is a dinosaur which does has not kept pace with the recent and rapid evolution of of digital music production. Unless you just like to collect app reproductions of antique gear, skip this one. There are plenty of better music production apps out there.
Clever but frustrating
It's obviously a clever app, based on the fun of tapping pads a la the old Akai drum machines. It does a lot more than that now. But, it's also a study in frustration. Program saving/changing is rough. And then you just want to toss the iPad when it crashes every 5-10 minutes. Other reviewers have mentioned the crashing whenever working with the sampler. Happens most of the time. Lost work all the time. They seem to be done updating it, which is sad.
