iNeuron® is a game that teaches neuroscience concepts through a series of instructional challenges and learn-by-doing games. It facilitates both independent learning and collaborative problem solving.

By delivering game challenges in the relevant context of the human nervous system, iNeuron helps teachers meaningfully engage their students in neuroscience, which leads to better understanding and improved retention of the subject matter.

iNeuron is organized around two kinds of challenges. Content-based challenges teach concepts like the different types of cells, the role of inhibition and feedback in nerve function, and how to graph neuronal behavior.

Circuit-building challenges are structured to test and reinforce the concepts that were just taught. They require the student-player to manipulate various parts of a neural circuit (brain, neurons, feedback loops, muscles) to create a valid pathway and meet the objective of the challenge.

iNeuron also supports two distinct modes of play. In Single Player mode, students navigate iNeuron independently: they progress at their own pace, guided along the way by a series of brief questions that build and reinforce knowledge.

After mastering a base set of concepts, students can switch to Group Play mode, where they collaborate with a partner or small team to solve the circuit-building challenges together. Each student has control of some parts of the circuit they are building, but the circuit cannot be completed unless the group works together. As each student moves the parts they control, the others in the group can see what they are doing.

iNeuron was developed in collaboration with the University of Minnesota and funded by a prestigious 2-year grant from the National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH) targeted to improve K-12 neuroscience education. We are working on the next version of iNeuron and invite teacher feedback on how we can make it a more effective tool for learning.

Great source of information

During a Psychology class I took at Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis, MN, I was lucky enough to participate in this well developed application.

This app definitely helped me through the end-quarter exam, and even set me up to consider a study/profession dealing with and about the brain and neurons in general.

The app is very well developed and continues to amaze me, I am extremely grateful to have been able to learn about Neurons and the way they work. I learned very quickly and the information stuck.

I particularly enjoyed teaming up with my friends and figuring out how to make certain neurons work.

Good job Adventium, keep it up!

Great app by a great company!

This is the type of learning that students are hungering for. It is easy to use, intuitive, and the information sticks! Can't wait to see more apps like this from Adventium!
