Description

Inkist takes the features artists need: Layers, blend modes, customizable brushes, tablet pressure support, and more, and packages it in an interface designed to launch quickly, get out of your way, and let you work.

At this time Inkist is purely a bitmap drawing/painting app (no vector tools).

Features
• Layers, with blend modes, opacity, and opacity locking settings
• Color Palette with adjustable brightness and temperature controls
• Customizable Brush Parameters:
◦ Size
◦ Size (Under light tablet pressure)
◦ Softness
◦ Pattern (from image or layer)
◦ Flow
◦ Opacity
◦ Opacity (Under light tablet pressure)
◦ Scatter
◦ Size Jitter
◦ Lighten/Darken/Normal Blending
◦ More...
• Custom support for Wacom multitouch gestures.
• Blending tool
• Dodge/Burn blending with customizable strength for highlights, mid tones, and temperature adjustment
• Line tool
• Selection tools
• Hue Saturation Lightness controls
• Curves
• Flexible interface allows you to pop out the controls you want into floating windows, or view controls on the left or right of the window
• Export to PSD*, Jpeg, PNG, and Tiff (proprietary ISImage file format is Native)
• Import PSD* files

*PSD Limitations
• Layers are supported, but layer settings (blend modes, transparency settings) are not
• Layers above the bottom three layers will be flattened into the top Inkist layer
• Inkist may have trouble opening images significantly larger than Inkist's maximum canvas size

I wrote Inkist for one simple reason. I love my drawing tablet, but I've found that despite the fantastic power available in existing apps, they are cluttered and annoying to use. Inkist is the result of my work to fix that.

I basically wasted 10 buck. Really wish Apple had a way for us to hget our money back from apps that don’t work

In some ways better than Sketchbook Pro

I have used Sketchbook Pro quite a bit and I have to say this little drawing program can compete, which is great given the low price. What I really like about Inkist is how the tools never get in your way. I have a small 13inch Macbook Pro and the small screen does not leave a lot of room for tools so in Sketchbook Pro I'm always fighting with the tools when they cover up my drawing. Inkist solves that problem by making a tiny band on the side that doesn't hover over your drawing. It does take away a little bit from the drawing area, but I think I prefer it. Inkist also does quite a bit with that little space. The tools UI is very compact but also immediately useful and intuitive. I only ever spend a glance or two figuring out a new thing I want to do. How do I zoom? Oh the zoom bar. How do I pick a different cursor? Oh that's right there. Etc.

For even more than just simple drawings I would say this is a great app. It works well with my Wacom Bamboo tablet.

I did experience a small bug where the UI seemed to not respond when in fullscreen mode but I don't know if I just triggered some kind of editing mode or something. I quit the app without saving and started it again and it showed up with my drawing exactly where I last left it.

Overall I give it a not bad!

I like it!….most of the time.

I'm no serious artist; I use Inkist mainly for editing diagrams with a Bamboo pen. Sometimes Inkist can be really fidgety, even with the relatively low-processing type of editing that I'm doing. It's one of the few programs that I've had to restart my Mac or use "kill switch" to get the program to shut down (running a Macbook Air).

Also, the draw icon is so small that (even with my young eyes) I can't even see it.

I like Inkist, and I'll continue using it, but I would use a better program for my purposes if I knew what that program would be.
