Bug fixes and improved audio playback
Good, simple beat machine
I was looking at the GuitarTone app by the same company when I came across the InstantDrummer lineup. They had a deal on different rhythms and I was also shopping a beat machine anyway, so I thought, why not? Not bad! Easy to use, the sounds are quality and there is a bit of flexibility to the programming. I just run it with my computer speakers plugged directly into my iphone. Can be as loud as your speakers or amp, but I tend to play it low for at home practice. It will be nice to have on the road. One thing is it is slightly unwieldy - I understand space-saving reasoning behind not putting all 20 drummers together in one app, but why can't one have all the rock/metal/pop drummers together in an app, then the funksters/hiphoppers, and finally the world beats, all able to expand and combine beats within their respective genre apps using in-app purchasing? The files aren't THAT big, and combined would be around the size of a decent sized game.
More than Meets the eye
I just recently got into the instant drummer apps. I have a small, portable guitar amp that runs on battery (yamaha thr10) and it has both an aux input and hifi speakers to make things sound more realistic. I needed some way to play along to some beats that was as portable as my current rig, so I tried out Instant Drummer. I got the free one, but the sounds weren't really in my style. i play a wide variety of instruments so I started with this Hip Hop pack. Awesome. Let me first say that it's more than meets the eye. When i first started messing with the apps I though that the intensity for each part was a simple matter of loudness on each section. Wrong. Turns out each intensity is actually another loop itself. I wondered why there was only one verse beat and one chorus beat (ect) at first, but it turns out there is quite a bit more. This particular pack is great for playing with bass guitar. Some tips. The lower level intensity beats are actually the most inspiring, in my opinion, as they are more open and allow for better groove. Second off, slow the tempo down. To really jam on this app, you need to keep it slow. I love the ability to just loop a section within the timeline, and I also love the global eq, which is a pretty sweet effect for a simple program like this.
I am running on an 2nd generation ipod touch, which doesn't support some other drum apps. But this one runs great.
The only thing I'm not totally clear on is when you finish a song it renders and you can play the whole thing, but if you stop it has to render again. Why not make the file available until changes happen? I guess I have some more exploring to do as I don't know if this is user error or just the way the program works. Oh, one other thing I'm not totally happy with is that when the ipod goes into auto lock the audio stops. For a music app, especially for extended jamming, I wish it didn't do that, as i can jam on the same beat for quite some time. I don't like the idea of having to go and turn off auto lock every time i want to jam.
There's my two thoughts. If you play bass guitar and need some groove, check out this pack.
