Difference between KANE LIMO v. ÛBER
Recently I used INTERNATIONAL LIMOUSINE SERVICE, INC. (ILS) & ÛBER separately for a few occasions each over a month time period I required sedan service. The sedan service requirements varied from a dinner and a CAPS hockey game a couple times to a few airport transfers. I found the following review to be my experience:
In a couple instances I needed the driver to pick up a party at another address first than pick me up.
I couldn't give special instructions with ÛBER the night before and had to make the reservation with their Phone App the morning of the departure and gamble they would be there on time ..."if a sedan was in the area". The ILS drivers that I booked the night before was able to Mapquest the additional pick up location and understand the problem looking at a some kind of Google Earth Birds Eye View software to see the difficulty in-store for the early morning pickup. I could only book the sedan with ÛBER when I needed it early that morning and there were special instruction once they arrived at the driveway of the first party being picked up that was that was certain to cause confusion unless it was reviewed prior. Not being able to speak to a human was very frustrating when booking the sedan with ÛBER on just the app. It was made worse with ÛBER when I booked a car for a night out for Dinner and a CAPS hockey game. The pickup required some instructions again on the first pickup and I couldn't get the same driver to return us home later which required us to have to give the directions twice with ÛBER let alone complicating the pickup after the game with thousands of people everywhere. In the case of a morning pickup to the airport I wanted to have a newspaper and juice in the car and again ÛBER could not offer me the ability to make those requests. ILS was capable in handling those specific requests and having the same driver for the return pickup was helpful not having to give specific requests for what I wanted in the sedan and how to access the driveway as well as knowing a specific pick up location the nights at VERIZON CENTER. At the airport I like getting picked up at the drop off/Departure level to avoid all the traffic at the Arrival level and this couldn't happen with the ÛBER driver.
Driver & Car Quality:
On a couple occasions the ÛBER driver did not speak English clearly and did not map his directions as the ILS driver had planned a route each time prior to arrival and was prepared. In one case the ÛBER driver was not wearing a tie and dress shirt but a hooded top. The ILS drivers were always dressed accordingly with how a professional driver should dress. The ÛBER car was often not washed nor was it's condition clean in the back seat area and in most cases needed to be vacuumed. Some of the ÛBER cars looked like they could have been a late model Lincoln Sedan but in fact they were years old with often over many miles and showed its age as the rear passenger area was often very worn. The ILS car were fairly new model Cadilacs (I understand all ILS sedans are Cadillacs or Mercedes). ILS cars were clean with water bottles and a tissue boxes on the rear window deck. One of ILS drivers said ILS owns all their sedans and washes and cleans the inside before every job. Additionally the driver said ILS also maintains all their cars in house with full time mechanics. I was not as concerned if the ILS drivers was current on their car insurance or if the vehicles were being maintained properly by ILS. Knowing that ILS sees every driver and their car for inspection before each job gave me a great deal of comfort. I was impressed to hear from the ILS driver that they have a strict background checks to go through at ILS before being hired and revisited investigation of the same during the year for their drivers. Knowing this information was also comforting over the ÛBER drivers who have only their drivers record and car check once at the time of employment to be an Independent Contractor/Driver for ÛBER.
The ILS drivers were professional and knew their way around the city like a professional driver should. The ÛBER driver in one case spoke on his phone a few times and had his music station on which I had to tell him to turn off after I was picked up. It seemed as if he was offended. Additionally, the ÛBER drivers were not allowed to give me his cell phone number to pick me up when I finished our night after dinner and a CAPS hockey game. With ÛBER I had to use a new/different driver for the pick up. It was difficult for the next ÛBER driver to know which door we were coming out of at VERIZON CENTER and they had to circle the block a couple times before he finally found us while we were freezing waiting outside the arena. The pick up location was the same as the drop off location to avoid blocking traffic on the city street and was easy with the ILS driver. One night at VERIZON CENTER after the hockey game was finished - it was raining - the cost was tripled because ÛBER can increase their prices when they feel like it - is this actually legal?
I think it's clear which type service provider was the better one. I think it's also clear that both the quality of equipment and personal skills of the individual driver are not all equal between these two types of firms. As much as ÛBER wishes to treat this industry as some kind if a "net-neutral commodity", it's really not. I'd say ÛBER is a cab service in a short skirt.
Bottom line is There's a extraordinary large gap between a driver and a Chauffeur; as much as there's a difference between cola and Coke-A-Cola.
I found ILS to be the "REAL THING"
(Excuse my typos as I'm sending this from my iphone in the back of an ILS sedan)
