Build your Japanese vocabulary with the guidance of a Japanese Sensei.

Japanese Sensei is a vocabulary building application for learners of Japanese. Through structured, graded lessons and fun but challenging quizzes, learners of all levels can quickly expand their Japanese vocabulary.

This application is fully localized for English, Korean and Chinese (Simplified & Traditional) and Portuguese.

Building one's vocabulary is one of the most important and time-consuming aspects of language learning. This is why Japanese Sensei has been structured into small, bite-sized lessons so you can make quick, recognizable progress without feeling overwhelmed. Your progress will be tracked for you as you make your way through the lessons of the application, and will remember where you are in your studies, testing you only on the words you have learned, and even prioritizing words based on how well you have done on them previously.

The application features a special Review section with seven different quizzes and games to further test yourself and reinforce the words you have learned. Not only can you test yourself on vocabulary, but you can also try your hand at sentence building as well as learning how to use Japanese particles.

This application has not been developed using free dictionary data available on the web, but rather has been built using quality dictionary data produced by Jack Halpern's CJK Dictionary Institute. Halpern is the editor-in-chief of several kanji dictionaries for learners, which have become standard reference works.

Japanese Sensei comes loaded with nearly 10,000 of the most frequently used Japanese words as selected by a committee of experts on Japanese language education. What's more, each word is accompanied by example sentences, and audio for all the words and example sentences recorded by native Japanese speakers. By concentrating on the most frequent, important words, Japanese Sensei allows you to focus on exactly the vocabulary you need to learn to start speaking and reading Japanese fast.

Ratings and Reviews

Thank you profusely!

Thank you *so much* for keep supporting and updating this app throughout the years -- I think 7 years maybe? I'm
an old user since the very day Sensei was launched, and at that time I downloaded Sensei on an ancient iPod touch. I can testify the extraordinary kindness and commitment of the Sensei developers -- most of my other ancient apps have been defunct but this one is running! I've shelved learning Japanese for years but this year i'm taking it up again, and Sensei is my single most used app everyday and the favorite by far. I use all my micro-time memorizing words and sentences. I've finished all the lessons beginning and immediate, and now you launched a most recent update that adds another advanced level! Amazing, I'm so looking forward to it! I can't thank you enough for your great effort and your kindness! -- W

I was iffy about this app at first but soon realized I have been a student of Japanese for nearly 3 years and have many useless books and apps to prove it! I agree with the first reviewer in that this app has been worth the money so far. They approach Japanese by teaching you how to read it which has done wonders in my studies. Many learn Japanese piece by piece such as vocabulary, particles, and tense and then try to put it all together. this approach never really quite worked out for me. In learning Japanese as it is written, I was able to get a better grasp of the sentence structure as well as vocabulary and kanji. It allows romaji for those not steady in hiragana and katakana yet and furigana for kanji. The audio is good and each example sentence is read by native speakers. My only concern are the readings, in which one reading may be listed when there are several more for kanji. Overall I find this app fun and a good learning tool for Japanese.

Worth every penny :)

This app is amazing! Been using it for several months now and am loving it. One neat feature that I absolutely find brilliant is the way anytime you look up words in the index, they are then automatically added to your review list. This makes my life easier, since I often use this app as a dictionary when using other learning materials/watching Japanese programs/reading, etc, and can easily review the words I looked up with any of the delightful review modules. It works perfectly, really really neat. Gush gush :) Oh, and the interface is surprisingly intuitive, the voices are of top quality, both male and female, and the review games are fun and support the learning module perfectly -I have no complaints whatsoever. Would love to see any of the author's other ideas for learning games added to this app too (maybe later?). Maybe a direct input game? Love it!
