A wonderfully simple note/journaling app
I’ve been using The Journalist now for a full week to do daily journal entries. Here’s my 3 star review.
This app is straight up fantastic if you’re just wanting a place to write every day or even take notes. The interface is clean, it has simple Markdown-style support (only the # H1, bold, italics, and lists). It keeps track of notes by days, allows for images to be easily added, and has a smart interface to show you word count per day as well as how many days you’ve written.
This could be a five star app if some issues were addressed.
It’d be great if you could choose custom output themes. Currently you can change the font that you’re typing in, but the display is still the original font. While you can almost achieve a “read-only” view, you have to drag the divider all the way over. There should be an option for just “reading” notes/entries. This would likely be fixed if you could add custom output themes (CSS), but the editor does support other markdown formats (blockquotes, code blocks) but the output isn’t formatted, or is poor. Also, it’d be nice to configure the the report screen (for instance, hide morning pages) or configure a dashboard for statistics. Whenever I do add images, the output flickers and it doesn’t show what I’m currently typing (it’s not in sync with the editor) and that’s a bit annoying. Finally, whenever the journalist is running, it is a pretty big battery drain. Not sure why, but even when minimized, it’s impact is between 20 and 25.
Overall I like the app, and most of the features that exist work well, but it needs a lot more polish to be worthy of 4 or 5 stars.
