Have you ever wondered what mysteries the ocean holds?
Prepare to explore the ocean from sunlit shallows to the deepest, darkest depths. Along the way, you’ll meet many incredible creatures that are brand-new to science.
Dive to a coral reef and spot a new species of pygmy octopus. Travel deeper and discover fragile, nearly transparent jellies as they drift past. Then head down into a world of eternal night. You’ll encounter animals that make their own light and zombie worms that feast on the bones of dead whales.

Your adventure is based on the real journeys of scientists involved in the Census of Marine Life. From 2000 to 2010, more than two thousand researchers from eighty-two countries carried out the most extensive investigation of ocean life ever attempted.

Author Rebecca L. Johnson takes readers to research sites around the globe, showing how ocean scientists do their work. Stunning photographs throughout bring readers face-to-face with some of the most mesmerizing creatures on Earth.

Excellent app, constructive criticism

This book app skillfully blends the static text of the printed version with multimedia and interactivity. The few videos included are relevant and interesting. I wish the app included other videos that were mentioned in the text. Also, I wish it had a tappable index to let readers re-locate a word, image, or video without having to remember the page it was on.

The app is rated 4+, but the vocabulary and complex sentences are too advanced for kids that young. To his credit, my 5 year old kindergartener kept an interest as I read to him, but I believe that's because he has been captivated by deep sea creatures for two years. For kids with a fleeting interest, this book may not hold their interest. I recommend it for 8 and up.

The navigation is good, and the hotspots are consistent and explained well at the start. One suggestion I have is to make accidental page turns less likely somehow. Make the hotspots bigger and give the pages some friction. Little fingers have a tendency to slide while trying to tap, causing pages or entire chapters to change.

On the whole, I enjoyed this app with my boy and I look forward to seeing more material like it.
