Ratings and Reviews
Playback interface is pretty poor
I’m a journalist who uses recording apps a lot and saw good ratings for the iOS and Watch versions, and it indeed works well on those devices. I was hoping, however, that the Mac OS version would allow me to access my recordings for my own transcription (so far the transcription function on the iOS version has been mediocre at best). It’s a lot easier to transcribe using a Mac OS interface than having to repeatedly reach for the iPhone. The problem is, the playback interface on the Mac is nearly worthless for me. There’s a play/pause button, but nothing else. At least the iOS version has 10-seconds-forward and 10-second-reverse buttons, which are invaluable for transcribing my own recordings. It appears that the design of the Mac version is geared more for the recording side than the playback side. I’m sure I can find a method of playback that gives me the functionality I need, but it’s too bad that the actual app doesn’t have that.
MacOS Version is minimally useful - and poorly described / misleading
I just started using Just Press Record for iOS and like it for quick voice notes and easy transcription, but the Mac version is limited and poorly - even misleadingly - described.
The current release description says it doesn’t generated transcripts itself, but “You can view your transcripts from your iOS app in Just Press Record for Mac”.
A developer reply to a review question says transcript generation is currently iOS only because that’s the only api Apple currently supports, but that they’re eager to add Mac support if/when Apple adds MacOS support. Fair enough.
But “You can view your transcripts from your iOS app in Just Press Record for Mac” is misleading. All I can see its **The first 60 or so characters in a non-scrolling text area below the playback control ** shown in a non-scrolling text box below the recording control! That’s not “viewing the transcript” and greatly reduces the value of the Mac for me. That’s why I decided to buy the app rather than play the iCloud audio using iTunes or Quicktime.
If that were added as a fix, I’d bump my rating to three (or maybe four) stars.
The text area where the transcription appears should definitely be scrollable. If you drop us an email (Help Menu > Contact Us) we will try to help you.
iOS version is good, this one is almost useless
I liked the iOS app so I bought this one too, mainly so that I could browse/read the transcriptions I’ve recorded and listen to the audio. The Mac version does that…barely. Instead of giving you any kind of built-in UI, you’re dumped to a file browser window where you can double-click on a file to open up a small window with the transcription. I’d expect something a lot more full-featured, especially if you’re going to charge people $5 for the Mac version as well as the iOS one. For this little functionality, you should give it away for free and just advertise that the iOS version has a Mac utility for (barely) playing your recordings and reading transcriptions.
