Keycard is undoubtedly the easiest way to keep your Mac secure when you're not around.
Using Bluetooth®, Keycard locks your Mac using your iOS device when it detects you are leaving your computer. When you come back, it unlocks it for you. Leaving your desk for 10 minutes? Grabbing a coffee in the library? Take your iPhone or other iOS device with you and it can serve as your own personal “Keycard.”
What's New in Version 1.2
-The lock screen now behaves better when a full screen app is up and Keycard locks.
-Keycard now locks when you power down your phone or turn Bluetooth off on your phone.
-Control the sensitivity of Keycard via a new sensitivity control in settings screen.
-Various bugs and memory leaks fixed.
-Various UI tweaks.
Great in concept - poor in execution
While the premise of having a proximity device lock and unlock your Mac is a great idea, KEycard seems to fail in reliable execution.
1. Open on startup will not stay checked - this isn’t too much of an issue for me as I rarely restart my machine, but it is frustrating that a simple feature that so many other apps can provide doesn’t work here.
2. It’s unpredictable - for a security application I want to know that it’s going to work all the time, every time. Sometimes the delay between walking away and the Mac locking up can be 2 or 3 minutes. Sometime it’s instant.
3. Random behaviour - often while sitting at my desk with my iPhone in a fixed position the lock screen pops up for a few seconds then goes away. I’ve tried repositioning the phone, moving it closer to the Mac, etc but all to no avail.
4. Flaky connections - the phone icon regularly says “connected to iPhone” but there’s a red error symbol in the phone icon rather than the green check mark. To get things working again I have to disable and re-enable b/t on my phone and force the conenciton again.
All in all, I love the idea of having my machine lock when I walk away, but I feel I can’t trust the app and the random locks when I’m close to my machine too make this app unusable.
Almost Works - Please Update (Don’t buy)
When I first got this app working it appeared to work great. Now it never locks when my phone is out of range. It says it's connected to my iPhone, but never locks. The "open on startup" option does not function, I had to manually add the app to startup applications for my user. If you click the settings (gear) button too many times (IE: when the app is hanging, like it frequently does) it eventually opens multiple instances of the settings UI which have to each individually be closed with the left arrow button.
If it worked consistantly this would be a 5 star review.
Kinda surprised you are charging for this app, as it feels like it's in beta.
Developer: Please read this! (I’ve lowered my rating to 1 star)
It’s been months and the app still barely works. It works great when you first boot/run, but after a while it just stops locking the screen. This is a MAJOR defect… if you are expecting this application to lock your computer and povide any form of security, having it fail to lock when you are away is serious.
Either fix your ap or start refunding customers.
Causes Kernel Panics
I would love for this to work. In fact, it does work when you first set it up. "Cool!" you think to yourself. Then, you walk off to a meeting and trust it locks your screen… the majority of the time, it fails to lock your screen at all. Yes, I have tweaked the sensitivity and read the sparse support site.
However, the real issue is this: EVERY single time I have left Keycard running overnight it has crashed my computer. Not a simple "this app crashed" kind of crash - a kernel panic, where you lose everything unsaved and your computer reboots itself and gives you ugly warnings.
The first time this happened, I assumed it was a fluke. Updated all software. The third time it happened, I emailed Keycard. Their reply was: yes, we know this happens and we're working on it. Nice enough reply, but this is a major issue. I have let it crash my machine about 10 times now in 2 weeks and am now uninstalling it. NOT recommended.
If you read previous reviews, you will see crashing (and non-reliablity in general) has been an ongoing issue with the product for many versions.
