A critically acclaimed work of interactive fiction, Killing Time at Lightspeed allows players to experience life aboard a spaceship hurtling through lightspeed. Just how much can you affect other people's lives with your fleeting interactions through social media? And will it be for the better?

"It’s clever for all sorts of reasons, but the most smart aspect is its recognition of your passivity in the role of a visual novel player, and making that the most crucial part of the story is telling."
- John Walker, RockPaperShotgun

"It simultaneously tackles the extremely personal and the tremendously impersonal nature of online communication: you can see the full range of emotions your friends experience, but you can’t attend their weddings, meet their children, offer them anything but words on a screen."
- James O'Connor, ZAM

"I felt a sense of growing despair each time I hit the “refresh” button... Killing Time at Lightspeed is, more than anything else, a timely game about technology and the role of social media not just in the future that developer Gritfish has created but in our present reality as well. "
- Javy Gwaltney, Paste Magazine

You never know what the last thing you say to someone will be.

On a transport ship leaving earth, a passenger kills time by scrolling through the messages of their social media feed. As the ship leaves and moves further and further away from home, the delay between sending messages and their arrival lengthens. What feels like minutes on the ship is hours, days, weeks, even years back on Earth. Each refresh of the timeline is a tiny window into the past. What will you do in those precious few moments as the lives of everyone you know pass by?

Killing Time at Lightspeed is a complete experience with no in-app purchases whatsoever.

Waste of Money

PlatinumInferno

This game has an interesting premise and way of interacting with the story, but the story itself offers no payoff at the end and serves only to push a far-left progressive narrative.

Developer Response

Thank you for your compliments on the premise and the interaction design of the game. I'm glad the narrative intent comes through so clearly.

Fine?

NOTE - all of the pretty pictures are in the first half-minute for the setup exposition. All "gameplay" is the black-and-orange text interface shown in the latter pictures.

I played through this so it wasn't bad, but imho this game doesn't quite deliver on its interesting premise. Wish characterization has been stronger & each person's story more clear and well-paced. I get that it's trying to mimic real newsfeeds, but almost every character blended together for me.

Great Interactive Story

Emnemss

I love narrative and interactive story games. This has elements of the show Black Mirror and reminds me of the book 1984. I haven’t finished it yet but I have enjoyed it so far! I do not feel that it pushes a political agenda (even though some might feel that way). I believe that the creators are good storytellers that has created a story based on some truths we see today which is why it is so impactful.
I don’t recommend it for children I would suggest teens and up. If you’re a parent who is looking into buying this for a child, I would suggest you go through it yourself and discuss topics that come up with your child because some are sensitive and I feel the creators didn’t sugar coat it which is why it makes a great story.
