Amazing Places

I’ve been using this app for a couple of years, riding all over France, Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, England, Japan, Thailand, Australia and even Africa and Cuba from my living room. There’s so many options from flat rides to famous mountain roads and a few Ironman courses. Makes indoor riding so much more interesting! My only complaint is that the video play matches the rider who took it, of course. Since I’m not as fast as some of those dudes, the video has to slow down to wait for me. Wish it wasn’t so dependent on our varying abilities. But there are plenty of vids that match my wattage fine. Just wish it could be across the board. I never would’ve seen so many places around the world without this app!

Crashing. Can’t use

Crashing. Demo worked great.
...update post developers comments. I did have multiple email exchanges. Tried multiple (4) rides. Each except demo crashed. Not sure if demo is rigged or it's a problem with the app. Fullgaz allows to demo for 2 weeks any rides. Rouvy never crashed.

Good execution with Wahoo Cycling Trainer

The core goal of the app is good - I can ride virtual video rides that look great. The app allows me to ride at the original pace or my own pace, faster or slower. It integrates with the KICKR Climb too.

The physics under the surface seem to embrace the correct goals. Other virtual apps sometimes feel like I’m stuck in the mud because they are measuring power only and not including wheel speed, regardless of power output. This leaves me feeling disconnected and less responsive. Kinomap seems better than the apps I’ve ridden. I feel more connected to the visuals.

KICKR Climb works, but it doesn’t seem to have any specific coding in the app to smooth it out. I’d like to see separate calls to the Climb a second or two in advance of elevation changes affecting the trainer resistance like they do in the app whose name starts with an F. That little bit of attention would make Climb integration excellent. There’s a setting to adjust the amount of time it takes for the trainer to adjust to new incline settings. I need to play with it a bit to see if this helps.

Video quality overall is decent, but there is a wide disparity between good and bad. Unlike the app that starts with F, Kinomap supports a broader collection of video capture devices, and it appears as though there is no post processing to stabilize the image. Some videos have large “rests”, others seem out of sync between the visuals and the resistance. But many are spit on, high quality. And the filters on the search are very flexible. This helps to make a very large library of multi-discipline videos more manageable. You can even click on a map of the globe and identify any courses near your pin drop.

The dual screen feature is a great idea. I like the color gradients on the elevations, the overhead map view, and the options for what is displayed on the second monitor. It’s responsive and looks good on my iPhone 6s. I also can stream Pandora on my phone to my AppleTV that I screen share with while riding and streaming the Kinomap video and using the second screen. Thumbs up!!!

While the website allows you to save video rides to personal playlists, the app has no such feature. This is a drawback, and I took one star for this. I want to be able to browse and save rides in my downtime so I’m not searching when I want to be riding. This would be a great feature add for the app.

Another website option I’d like to see on the mobile app is the ability to preview a video without riding it. It would be great to be able to visually zip through a ride to evaluate the visuals without committing to riding it. Sometimes my motivation to get on the trainer is to view beautiful landscape as I pace. I’m not a super fast rider, and I don’t always want to push myself to the edge. I’d love to choose a handful of beautiful, flat-ish rides for days that I just want to hit a target heart rate for 30-45 mins. This would be an easy and unique feature to add.

I LOVE Challenge mode, so I can chase other virtual riders who have ridden a course previously. They show on both screens... on the small screen you can see everyone on the map, on the big screen you can see their avatar grow in front of you as you catch up and pass them (hopefully!!), their avatar disappears as you pass. This is a great motivator!!

In challenge mode the video also runs at the pace you are peddling, faster or slower than recorded. I prefer this to the alternative where you visually ride at the same pace as the original rider, regardless of effort. Inclines was still add or remove resistance, as appropriate. But your speed matches that of the original rider.

The physics on this one feel good. In challenge mode my mind is able to match my effort to the visuals on a speed incline basis. And my numbers match up pretty closely to similar efforts off of the trainer, though I always find my power curve a bit flat on a trainer no matter what I’m riding with. Height, weight, bicycle type and posture, and aerodynamic resistance (a bit more for we larger folk) all help to dial things in.

All in, I’m starting to think this will be my only indoor cycling app. It’s very good, and they continue to improve on a pretty regular cadence. The free rides are not very good, but if you’re willing to risk $10 for a month to try it, you might wind up happy, like I did.
