KNFB Reader gives you instant access to print anytime and anywhere.
KNFB Reader 3.0 is a rapid and efficient text recognition app. Its text-to-speech, text-to-Braille, and text highlighting tools make it valuable for blind, low-vision, dyslexic, and others with reading differences.
Use it to import or take a photo of anything containing text. Take a photo and the app reads text out loud or displays it on a connected refreshable Braille display. Read with more ease thanks to the simultaneous highlighting of the sentence and word that is being read on the picture or in the plain text document. The app helps you get a good photo with special alignment tools, including spoken and vibration guidance. Snap multiple pages, such as a book, for later reading.

Was great until version 3.0

I’d had this app for more than three years, and have really liked it overall, even though I am a bit of a klutz. However, with Version 3.0, it has become much more difficult to use, at least for this user. For one thing, the new user manual isn’t very helpful; it tells us what the app can do, but doesn’t really tell us _how to do things. With this significant an update, giving us the how-to is extremely important. For instance, importing text from other sources used to be very straightforward—and it worked well. Now, when I try to import something, I first have to find where the material _went. At first, in this version, it went into a folder called “Inbox” (not even mentioned in the user manual). With the latest update, however, “Inbox” is gone, and I have to search for it among the saved files, even though it technically hasn’t been saved yet. Then, I have to go through all kinds of hoops to save the document in a form that will recognize the text. Sometimes, the field of view report doesn’t work now. The whole thing is just harder to use, especially if I am saving documents. If the user manual were written from the viewpoint of a _new user, it would benefit all of us. Prior to this, I would have given it a higher rating.

Developer Response

Thank you for your feedback. Indeed the user manual describes all the buttons but it doesn’t include instructions. We will work on that an prepare some how-to instructions like you are suggesting.

In version 3.0, imported files were put in folder "Inbox".
With version 3.0.1, the imported files are placed in the "Documents" folder.
If you update version 3.0 to version 3.0.1, the documents from the "Inbox" are automatically placed in the "Documents" folder.

How can you upload a file?
- Choose in another app (eg Dropbox or GoogleDrive) to "export" the file to or "open in" another application.
- Select "Copy to KNFB Reader".
- The file ends up in the "Documents" folder.
- If you do not see the file immediately, you can refresh the file list (swipe down).

How can you save a file?
- Click on the "Save" button. You will find that button at the far left of the upper toolbar
- The "Save" dialog box appears.
- Enter a file name.
- Select a file type by clicking KNFB or PDF.
- Choose where you want to save the file: Local or on your cloud drive (Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive).
- Choose the folder in which you want to save the file.
- Click on "Save current file".

Speach Rate Adjustments Are Bad

In a recent update the speach rate settings are bad. First of all the range of speach rate is unnessessary. From way too slow to way too fast. Secondly, when set on 48 is normal (for me), but slide it to 52 and it's way too fast. ???? Lastly, when I'm finally able to get the speach rate set it goes back to the default setting every time I close the program. The default setting is insanely slow. This whole "Speach Rate" issue is very frustrating and needs to be addressed. Otherwise the app works well.

Update: 8 December, 2017. The first few words frequently come out as unreadable text (symbols). This app is good, but for $100 it should be MUCH better and get more frequent attention and updates. Still 2 star at best 😒

unhappy KNFB camper

App for visually impaired people that was very good, is now very, very bad!

After latest updates, app is no longer producing reliable information. Instead of giving text, it automatically goes to PDF. You then have to switch to text in order to get that mode. And when you do that you get gobbledygook. It appears you’re now have to switch to text mode in order to get text to speech. However even if you do that, you still get gobbledygook. Fix this app! Now using seeing AI as it is much more reliable and easier to use. If I could, I would try and get my money back for this cayenne FB unreliable app. I gave this app a rating of one. However if I could I would give it a -5 because it is now so bad.

We want to help you to have a better user experience with the app.
You can set KNFB as the default file type: Settings> Camera settings> Default file type: KNFB
Alternatively, the default settings for VoiceOver users can be chosen, making the setting optimized for text: Settings> "Apply default settings for users of the VoiceOver screen reader". Confirm the settings: click on "Yes".
If a PDF file contains no embedded text, you must choose to do text recognition.
Click on the "OCR" button that is located at the far right of the top toolbar.
Then you will see the OCR window that you also had in version 2.9 and you can start the text recognition.
