Komodo Abacus is an app to practice Abacus (Japanese Soroban). The abacus will display a randomly generated problem and challenge you to solve it using the abacus. Use the Validate button to test your answer and the Reset button to reset and start over with a new problem. You can practice addition and subtraction problems up to five digits with this abacus.
The app comes with Settings screen to enable Timer and Sound and also choose the difficulty level based on number of digits.
-Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication arithmetic
-Generates random problems to be solved
-Ability to select from 1 to 5 digits for the generated questions.
-Ability to verify the answer using the Validate button
-Timer support that can be turned ON/OFF
- Additional motion based options for ease of use (swipe Right to Validate, swipe Left to Reset)
What's New in Version 2.5
This release includes a fix for the random number generator for multiplication.
Lots of problems
As others have stated, paid version still has ads. The UI is not that smooth either. Gestures to rapidly move top and lower beads were unresponsive. Even slowing down many gestures were not recognized. The addition quizzes work well but the algorithm for subtraction has a bug. Obviously, calculating 2-6 or 3-4 is not possible on the soroban.
Since the developer seems to have no interest in updating this app, it is probably best to avoid it. I will obviously change my opinion if the developer becomes active in making changes.
The latest update did not solve any of the major problems this app has. At present the app is completely broken and useless, which is unfortunate because it was one of my favorite apps.
I like the random problem generator, but the responsiveness is quite poor. The timer is good, but the but to get a new problem is tiny and often doesn't work. Working the abacus, itself, is functional, but you can't really go for speed because you movements are so often not picked up. I much prefer Master Soroban ap for their abacus, but wish it had the random problems this ap has.
Bad ad placement or fat fingers?
The math problems are great. I have learned a lot while using this app on the iPad. But when I use this on the iPhone the ad banner nearly makes it impossible to proceed to the next math problem. No imagine handing this abacus to a child and see what different apps they will download or buy.
