An inside look into the brain of Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick's films all reveal an obsession with minute detail, so it is no surprise to learn that in real life he kept obsessively complete archives and notes of the filmmaking process. This app is a wonderful introduction to those archives, which are in part on view in a touring exhibition now at LACMA. There are some great photos of Kubrick on the set of 2001, Spartacus and Dr. Strangelove. ACMA also conducted some great video interviews for the app with people who worked with Kubrick or who were influenced by him, like Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan.

Highly recommended. And if you want to learn more about Kubrick's obsessive archiving practices, read Jon Ronson's book "Lost at Sea", which includes a report from Ronson on his many private visits to Kubrick's home and archives.

Kubrick

While I have not used all of the content on the app yet one can tell just by browsing the detail and care that went into creating this application which works to give the user a idea of what Stanley Kubrick meant to cinema. From interviews given on different films in different periods during his illustrious film career, to images of film productions and sets, to scripts and notes written by the director, to a complete timeline of his works in both photography and film this app is succesful in providing insight to the man and works to provide unaware film fans of what made him so special. The images are crisp and clear, navigation through the various menus is smooth, and the interface is modernistic yet elegant going hand in hand with the man who it is showcasing.

An informative and fun behind-the-scenes look at Kubrick

So glad LACMA put this app together for all of the people who aren't able to attend the exhibition (and for those who are!). You can flip through it for hours. I love the timeline feature and the hi-res images of Kubrick's hand-written annotations on production documents. There are also some great video and audio interviews with Kubrick's collaborators like Chris Nolan and David Slade. There is so much to learn in this app. Even if you think you knew Kubrick, you'll find something that surprises you in here!
