Good app but needs work.
I've been using iknow for more than a year now, and it has been a foundational tool in helping me learn Japanese. The selection of 6000 words for the Japanese portion is great, the spaced repetition is second to none, the daily tracking keeps me on point, and the support for community created flashcards means an potentially infinite amount of content. So why only 3 stars?
For one, there is still not support for split view which would help tremendously in my daily studies. I always have to slide my finger across from the right of the screen to bring up the dictionary app which sometimes accidentally causes me to make a selection in the iknow app. This disrupts the flow of my studies and is something that would not happen had there been split view app support. BTW, this IS a feature that is available in Anki, and the difference is insurmountable.
The most recent updates have also made some audio unplayable on certain example sentences. While not a deal breaker, it's something that does break the flow of my studies and won't be helpful for new words and sentences.
Also, the community feature was never implemented into the app, so you have to go to the website in order to find community flashcards. On top of that, they completely removed the community discussion and help sections of their website for unknown reasons. This was a great way to see how you were doing compared to others, and get tips on how to better remember words.
To finish things off, 6000 words and example sentences is certainly nothing to scoff at. Most people will never get through most of them, let alone master them. But what about those of us that do? I signed up for a lifetime account because I was in this for the long haul, and a core 7000 and maybe even 8000 might be nice. The average Japanese college student knows between 40,000 and 50,000 words, so the content is there, now it's about doing the R&D and recording it which I know is time consuming and expensive, but new content has literally not been created for the iknow' Japanese portion in years. Even just 500 more words. C'mon guys.
I hope that my concerns are at least taken into consideration, as I'm more than sure I'm not the only one that has them. Some of us use this app on a daily basis, and would just like to see some features that make the experience easier and more enjoyable. If at least on of these features and improvements are implemented, I will update my review. Thank you.
Excellent Application ... However there's always room for improvement !
I've been using iKnow for sometime now, even back when it was known as Smart.fm and there was other material to study.
This service has really delivered on what it is they state they will assist with Vocab acquisition and not that you are able to learn in "Context" which is really essential when you need something to stick.
Currently iKnow is the foundation of my Japanese learning and I'm very proud of that, because it makes all other study material that much easier to get through since most words and sentence patterns aren't all that foreign since I have had some type of contact with them before via iKnow.
All in all great App and I hope they continue to develop it and update the algorithm so that it continues to be a great resource. Also please let the community know if there will be an "Official" deck that will continue past The Core 6k. Thanks again!
