Customer Reviews
Updated review for 2017
Update May 2017: The browser version is much better than the app when learning Japanese. You can toggle between the kanji characters and the phonetic characters (kana) and also roman letters (aka romangi). This makes it much easier to look up a Japanese word in a dictionary. Therefore I recommending skipping the app version and using the web browser version instead. Also at the beginning of the year of learning it is much easier to interpret he pictures. But at some point after a few months the lessons suddenly get harder and the pictures become much more difficult to convert into words. A dictionary becomes essential at that point.
Previous Update: the iPad app runs, but the software continues to have bugs, such as having two or three blank choices (does not occur all the time). Also I don't want to automatically advance to the next screen but sometimes it does anyway, even though I turn off the auto advance. I can't review my wrong answers if the screen flips to the next page.
Original review: The app stopped working after I upgraded to the latest version of iOS. The app locks up after entering my email and password. Customer service suggested that I delete and reinstall the app. This didn't help. Fortunately I have a laptop and I can access Rosetta Stone via web browser. Kudos to customer service for responding quickly, but the app needs to be updated.
Gets a bad rap
I looked up reviews for RS online and got nothing but critical to subpar reviews saying it is no better then Duolingo or Memrise(both free apps). Here is a list of what all three do.
Duolingo - Focuses heavy on translating from German English and vice versa with some pronunciation. Has a great discussion form where you can ask questions and the users are fairly responsive. It wants you to review lessons which is fine but sometimes it's ridiculous e.g once you are farther down the tree and you complete two skills within a few minutes of each other it will say you need to review the previous skill. You sure Duo?
Memrise - A little bit less repetitive than Duo and teaches a more broad variety of words. No pronunciation.
Rosetta Stone - Focuses on association which is in my book easier to remember. You can tell from the get-go RS is better developed. There are a few minor ticks such as the phone version cutting off the first letter of every word. You will want to translate some words as it's not always 100% clear what the pictures mean. It provides a chat room where you can practice your language to your hearts content.
So in summary, yes RS has a few ticks but it is far from the underdeveloped unteachable program the internet describes it as. I think the prices have lowered and they have lots of discounts. Its really it's never a good argument to say something is expensive, since that's not the case for all people and it doesn't mean the program isn't good.
Just okay
Purchased this app due to all the hype about Rosetta Stone. Tried it out. It is fun. Everything is a game. There is an introduction of some terms and then grammar and other words get built on top of it so you learn to construct different sentences.
My biggest issue with this app is that there is no explanation for anything. No explanation of grammar, declensions, gender, etc. There is no theory at all. And sometime it takes a little time to figure out just what the rule is to understand why the right answer is what it is. It also makes it harder to speak on your own.
Also there is no writing! No explanation why a combination of sounds is pronounced this way rather than another. So reading aloud is just like being a parrot. The logic behind it is not pointed out at all.
I think these are serious drawbacks especially for a course that charges $200!
