I'm on my way
It is my first experience learning a language with Rosetta Stone (I've learnt 4 foreign languages before, not including this one now, plus I am a native speaker of 2 official languages in the country I was born). I love how Rosetta Stone makes you intuitively learn things. But I must say, my previous experience with other languages helps a lot here, I'm not sure if English, for example, was my native language and it was the only language I spoke Rosetta Stone would be that easy. When the subject gets more complicated (like some past tense conjugations for example) I wish I had a theoretical article that I could go to (if I wanted) that would explain to me or at least conclude what I've learnt step by step. Maybe I feel this way because each time I learnt a language before it was classic theoretical teaching and now I'm just afraid, maybe it just takes time and you really must complete all 5 levels and then everything sits in your brain just right and you understand everything yourself without additional help. I'm only at level 3 right now and I'm not gonna stop. Anyway, there's tons of info online in case you wanna learn a piece of theory for any language. Overall I really like it. I love that I can practice with native speakers, they also have nice games and texts to improve your language if you buy additional access, it's not that expensive but totally worth it.
Depends on your goals
Note: This version of the app is extensively redesigned from when I started using it a year ago. The interface is a little nicer, and the stability is GREATLY improved.
In general, I don't recommend Rosetta as a standalone method for learning a language. The predominantly multiple-choice exercises just don't provide enough practice actually forming sentences from scratch, recalling vocabulary out of the blue, etc. However, it might be useful if, for example, you just want to learn to read a language, and don't need to actually be able to speak. I also think it's a great supplement to a language class or travel immersion experience, as a way to get more practice with vocabulary or systematic exposure to grammatical structures. Or, for self-study, use it alongside competing products with complementary strengths and weaknesses -- though of course, that can get expensive fast...
I would also add that quality varies significantly depending on the language you're studying--some courses do a better job than others of providing systematic exposure to the particular quirks of the language. So, before buying, I recommend looking around the Web for reviews specific to the language you're interested in.
Poor customer service
I downloaded the app that allows you to try it for free. I did that and decided to buy the program, but I bought through my emails and not the app. Every time I try to start the app it tells me to buy the program. I tried "chat" and they just took my email info and written complaint. It was about 11pm eastern time so maybe "chat" was off-line, but why not say so and list hours. Well, it took at least 2 days to get a response, and both times it was the same canned response telling me how to log on my computer despite my saying that I was trying to do it on an IPad. Well, maybe I'll get a response between this review and the poor response I gave to their survey. Now, it is over a month and they probably won't let me cancel my subscription. They did that when I bought the discs thinking I could use them on my iPad. It was a busy time, and I didn't get to realize they could not be used on the iPad. When I called at 45 days they could see I had logged in only 1 time, but since it was over 30 days they could not help me, even though I just wanted some credit to change to an iPad version. So, you would do better finding other online learning programs. They have to be cheaper and more customer friendly.
